Any 340's in Chargers????

So, i had a question from a young new Mopar enthusiast that came walking by my house when i was washing the Bee.

I had never really thought about it, but he was asking if there were any 340's put in 68-72 Chargers.  I have never seen one,


Anyone know?

Mine had a 340 in it in 1978 when I bought it. Put the 440 in it in 1988.

Definitely 72. Definitely NOT 1968-1970. I really can't answer about 1971 off the top of my head. The big engine options (Hemi, 440 Six Pack) disappeared in 72 so perhaps they debuted then.

Come to think of it, I don't think the 340 was available in a B-body at all until 1972. It was available in A-body cars (Dart, Barracuda) starting in 1968 and in E-body cars (Cuda, Challenger) starting in 1970.

1971 - the 340 was an option I believe. Wasn't it the "J" code for a VIN? I believe it was a last minute replacement at the end of the 1971 year for the Super Bee package.

There is a 72 rally/340 about 5 miles from me sitting outside a barn slowly rusting. Talked to the owners Dad ,he said his son was not intersted in selling.

I have a 340 in my garage from a 72 Rallye in case he's missing the original motor. I don't believe they made a whole lot of them.

I'll keep that in mind if I see the owner. His Dad let me look at the car, said several guys had asked about it. Blue ,hidden headlights, bulge hood with 340 Magnum call outs, 8 3/4 /727. Could not see the VIN. Hate to see it wasting away.

I almost bought a 69 with a transplanted 340. That thing was actually set up pretty good... a real goer.
