What does 550 horse power cost?

How much will it cost to build a 550 horse engine? Starting with the purchase of a rebuildable 440. Machine work and rotating assembly done at the machine shop. Assemble the rest your self.

$10-$15 per/hp is a decent guideline {depending on parts you already have}, for a quality std. type shade tree mechanic performance builds, higher end quality parts & full on race engines it could be $20-$25 up to & exceeding those #'s very quickly/easily... Depends on parts chosen, what you start with, lets say your going to start with a basic 68-72ish 440 you already own, heads rods crank & block are all in decent re-buildable shape & for over the counter basic stuff, towards the bottom of the scale, std. ignition, stock harmonic balancer, hydraulic cam, std rockers push-rods & lifters, some head work, like multi angle valve job & spring changes, some machine work like stock rods re-sized & new bolts, crank turned & balanced, block & head decking &/or surfacing, block bored & honed, new hypertech pistons, rings & bearings, new oil pump & gaskets, no real chrome or billet do dads, etc... If you chose to build a higher quality more durable high hp engine with sfi certified race quality parts, go to a Billet or high dollar stroker crankshaft, forged/billet H-Beam or billet Aluminum rods, high compression forged custom pistons & rings, sfi certified or high dollar harmonic balancer/damper, aftermarket or large bore block, roller cam & lifters, springs, Titanium valves retainers & locks, high ratio custom roller rockers, high cfm flow intake/carb & aluminum heads, high rise aluminum intakes, tunnel rams, cross rams, multi or high dollar carburetors or injection, intake head porting/polishing, belt drive or gear drives, billet accessories & chrome goodies, custom oil pan & oil system vacuum pump, super hot ignition, block girdle, windage tray &/or crank scraper, quality hardware {hardened studs, nut's, bolts & washers}, custom machine work & balancing & heavy metals for a race engine balancing etc., it will double or triple in cost pretty damn quickly...   Sometimes the best route, cost effectively or bang for the buck, is an  pre-assembled "crate engine", especially if your a novice builder or don't have the block, crank, heads & other small parts, or the knowledge already... Buy some books on the subject & study up before you spend a dime on parts, it will be money well spent...

I would say 550 at the crank. I am driving an SRT10 Ram, it's rated at 505 HP, I would assume 505 at the crank. It is an awesome truck. I would love more HP in the Charger.

This is a Car Craft build & has some parts & prices. A good steel crank 440 would be around $700-900 depending on how complete & machine work would be another 1K if you get some head work.

You can get a fully dressed motor from blueprint engines(jegs/ summitracing)440 stroked to 493 with 525hp 590ftlb for $8k. I think that's my route instead of trying to rework my 2 bbl 383.

There a shop here in Phoenix selling a 630 HP, 595lb' 440 for $8000. 2 yr warranty. The way I read it it comes carb to oil pan, water pump, fuel pump, harm balancer, and dizzy.

Still need to finish off the front of the motor with big block brackets and pulleys, and anything that wont swap over from the small block. Big block radiator, torsion bars, engine mounts, trans adapter kit, headers. Then new hood, or cut a hole in mine, repaint. I rough estimate all this at $5000, plus another $8000 for the motor. What am I missing?

I have the flat hood right now. I have to use a 2" tall air cleaner to just get 1/4" clearence with the small block using an eddy RPM air gap and Holley. I would think a big block with an Eddy intake will not clear the flat hood.

My 440 ,performer rpm, Schumacher mounts, 14x4 dropbase aircleaner clears my VFN bulge hood by about 1/4".   An Edelbrock  CH4B intake is lower and with a snorkle style cold intake system and remote filters it might clear a flat hood ?

Did you have the 518 built for 550 HP/ 600 tq ?
