Carter carbs and Street Hemi's

I know Carter was a preferred oem supplier for Chrysler and I know they are a nice simple plug and play carb, but why do you suppose they were chosen for the Street Hemi?  The race version of the engine had Holleys so why saddle the Stock Eliminator guys with an AFB?  It was already an expensive engine so cost should not have been the issue.  It was already a detuned engine so why not give owners something to work with?  Most of the people who ordered a Hemi would be car guys and racers, it just seems like it would get the same carb?

that thought has crossed my mind also  :scratchchin:   maybe , tuning two 4 barrels carters are less complicated than a holley , inexperienced  owners can get a lot more wrong with a holley especially changing parts   :scratchchin: :shruggy: , &  in case it was bought  by the average guy on the street  , plus none performance  dealers were more familiar with carters maybe  :scratchchin: :shruggy: maybe

I have to believe with the HP potential of the Hemi they may have used the worst possible carb to limit the power , even a pair of AVS carbs would have worked better , using the cross ram & 2 Holleys netted them around 700 HP with a cam upgrade

Ghoste

I can understand that for the street ones, but doesn't that also really limit the Stock class racers (thereby ruining some pr potential)?

Holleys are harder to mount close together in tandem due to the front/rear mounted fuel bowls, on the crossram they're so far apart it doesn't matter.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

maxwellwedge

Maybe it was easier to figure out the choke heat with the AFB's?

And a bunch more compression - no?

Okay, that one makes sense.

You that too , but I am sure Mopar really did not want to unleash the full potential of the Hemi to Joe average with too much $$

Actually in Stock Eliminator with the cam restrictions the AFB's really are not a hinderance. The induction system is really well thought out.

It's because of the fuel bowls. Putting two Holleys back to front is possible using the Marine manifold but when you try to fit an aircleaner overtop them it either becomes too high to fit under the hood or really, really long if you drop the base and envelope the fuel bowls with the air filter.
Also the original Race Hemi used dual AFB's on the crossram, they quickly changed it to Holleys.
