Found a car thats not holding charger the guy tells me the alternator is not charging the battery. (im assuming he bought a new alternator etc...mopar guy) also he keeps blowing his fuse.

what else could be the issue?

Nacho-RT74

alright....guess it will be hit or miss for him. told him to replace everything that has electrical wires.

Nacho-RT74

well I meant... you told I'M ASSUMING HE BOUGHT A NEW ALT... well, he did it or not ?

which fuse is blowing ?

so everything we can say up to now is check any wire grounding to chassis, bulkhead conectors, regulator...

got it ?

if you are blowing a fuse, somewhere beyond that point you have a wire grounding, or a device grounding. nacho needs to know which circuit is blowing. could be bare wires, wire hooked up to the wrong post, too many things to question unless you know exactly what has been done and what was wrong before he did anything. yep nacho needs more info. :2thumbs:

I have nothing technical to add, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who's so wrapped up in this hobby that I type 'Charger' when really trying to type 'charge'!

Go on, admit it - you've done it too!  :icon_smile_big:

which BTW, run and charge circuit are not fuse protected... beside just the FUSE LINK... Is not clear if you meant simply a fuse or actually the FUSE LINK.

headlights aren't either fuse protected, just the same fuse link. And to get that fuse link blown it must have a HEAVY short... direct positive wire to the chassis. And it takes sometime to fully blown out

This is why I went 1 wire.

Nooooo youve ruined your mopar with good reliable parts that can easily be found at any parts store"!!

Yes, but  no need to search the ends of the earth for a alternator....i can find gm parts at my local convenience store, jk...but seriously its much easier and cheaper to find a gm 1 wire alt than a mopar.

Not to mention you will actually be charging the car at idle.

Nacho-RT74

well thats true, but, I'm still a f***ing stockish look guy LOL

ive got a new battery, fully "chargered", new 78 amp alternator, and a new voltage regulator, and im still getting a constant discharge on the alt gauge even when giving it some gas. its severe when using the lights. it never goes to the right of center on the gauge.

i dont see any melted wires on the firewall.

im using a MSD eCurve distributor with the ballast resistor bypassed.

getting 12.4 volts at idle.

what do i try next?

i havent heard that term before. how do you full field an alt?

Nacho-RT74

I meant, full 12 volts to alt brushes ( + and - ), bypassing reg

Where did you buy the Alternator?  I went through 2 part stores (O'rileys/autozone) and 3 Remans before I finally got an 78 Amp alternator that charged correctly.

nrt69

Nacho,
no, is what youre talking about in the other thread titled "electronic voltage regulator......68"? how do i check?

solids0be,
got it at OReilly's. they have 60, 78, and 100+ amp alternators. I think my part number was 01-0153M.
