Any Harm In Running a HV Oil Pump-Stockish 440?

I'm building a stockish 440 (.030 over. Stealth heads, .465/.488 lift) just a street cruiser with occasional blasts. The engine has a brand new HV oil pump installed. I know I don't need it, but to save cash I would like to use it if possible.

Thanks!  :2thumbs:

Make sure you have enough oil capacity in the sump. I run a HV pump with the factory hemi/magmun sump which is 6 quarts, no problems but it's a street car - max 6k rpm, if that. I have also herd of oil pump drive shaft breakages on old shafts with HV pump but no bad experiences myself.

From SBF experience and i can't see why any engine would be different. See below

Whats the main/rod clearances ? When running a HV pump you have more clearance and a deeper sump pan. Stock clearances = stock type pump. With a HV pump you need a forged oil pump shaft as there is a lot more resistance.

The HV pumps are crazy. First time with a sbf priming the engine by hand it squirted oil 6 feet over and onto the wall. More volume through the same passages = more pressure too.

I'm running a Melling HV in my rebuilt 440 with no problems. .060 over Speed Pro Hypers @ 9.5 to 1 spec., forged crank cut .010, stock RR Mopar cam 40lbs @ idle 60lbs over 3K. Stock pan and pickup.  :2thumbs:

I have a HV pump too,it was  in the engine, and also was thinking if i would need to change it.
80psi at idle, when the engine is cold.Maybe too much pressure.

You need 10 psi for every 1000 rpm,if i,m correct.

with a stock oil pan I stick with a std volume / high pressure pump or install the black spring in a stock pump

Install the 6qt hemi pan and you'll be fine with a HV pump. I like lots of oil pressure for street driven cars. 40psi at hot idle is what i shoot for.  :2thumbs:

Kind of an old school thing. Now a lot of high end engines run less pressure with the newer oils. More pressure is more drag.

Nascar engines run around 40psi and turn over 7k rpm.

My 440 runs a HV pump too, has 80+ psi cold with 15-40 oil.  Never really drops below 50 when warm, been that way forever.

yes i've heard of that also ,  with the original OEM oil pump drives  , but never seen it  , think the oem oil pump drive  is cast :scratchchin: ,  ((((not 100% will have to dig my original out , but looking at the Hex end , looks like an after thought & just stuck on there ,)))) the hex section can snap off clean , with Hv pumps

It is recommended that a heavy duty (hardened) intermediate shaft be used with a HV oil pump.

I ended up just getting a new STD volume pump. I already have a 5qt pan and don't want to go for another. Thanks.

I used the HD shaft and had a new bushing installed in the block. The bushing requires it be burnished in place for shaft fitment with a tool.  :scratchchin:
