I run 4.30s on a 28 inch tire behind my mild 383\4 speed. Its pretty sick on the street. 55-60 mph gets about 3000 rpm. So highways are doable. I've made many long trips without concern.
I wnt from 2.76s to 4.30s so the difference was incredible. I was going to get 3.91s but couldn't pass up the deal on the 3rd member with gears

I have a 505/4spd/4.10 combo with Gear Vendors overdrive. I did the power tour with it, no issues other than mileage of course...

Without the overdrive highway would suck balls going more than an hour. Around town, it's cool but street tires (not DOT slicks) are wasted-if you plan on 4.10 or 4.56, without overdrive you'll wish you'd done 3.76 or so on the highway so give careful measure to how you actually drive, not how you'd like to drive. I drive pretty easy most of the time, so I'm building an 8-3/4 with 3.55 gears for touring and I'll keep the 4.10 Dana for track times, which will be few and far between.

You didn't say auto or stick...converter matched to your motor may make the gears you have feel a lot better, without giving up the hiway yumminess.

3:55's are a great gear for compromise on the street, IMHO.   :yesnod:

I've got 3:91s in my '69, but that's with a Keisler auto O/D. Great on the highway with the OD, and it has a very low 1st gear so off the line is is equivalent to having a 4:10.
