Anybody restore or collect old gas pumps?

I've a buddy here in Nova Scotia that has a 1950's Gilbarco gas pump. He recently posted pictures of it in an album on Facebook, with the idea that somebody would give him an idea of how much to ask for it - providing he decides to sell it!

I hit him with an offer for $500, which was basically supported by another guy's offer for the same amount.
My buddy figures it's worth $800, based on the selling price of several he's seen on eBay.

If you have an opinion as to it's value, please wade in with an amount.

I don't restore or collect them personally but I can definitely recommend a few.  One in Ontario is Bobs Antqiue Gas Pumps.

There is also a petroliana collectors organization but I forget their precise name.

Hey Robin,
I have been searching for a old pump, if you find anymore let me know. :2thumbs:

I had five but I just sold three of them. I think the one in the pics above is worth about $400 to $500 in today's market. EBay is always higher because the whole world is watching/bidding and it is just like buying a car... how bad do you want it.

I got a couple of 60's Sunoco pumps - The Blendo-matics with Sunoco 260. Matching air pumps too.

I have been looking for one to...that Bobs place is close by me, so I may visit there.....all the pumps I see at swap meets are all around the $500-$650 range for one similar

It would look cool if you have "show" garage/shop where it would be next to neon signs, on checkered tile floor, etc etc.

I've directed the owner of the gas pump to read this thread.
He is still under the impression that the pump is worth more than $500.
That's fine.
I found an air meter several years ago. It was complete, and restorable. I paid the owner $20 for it. I'd been wanting one of those ever since I was a kid!
I disassembled it, got the body media blasted then powder coated. I bought all new chrome hardware for it as well.
Ultimately, it ended up costing me around $200 to restore, but I feel it was worth it!

This gas pump, if restored the same way as the air meter, would probably run about $2500 to do it up completely, which is actually only a cosmetic restoration.
So, if I got it for $500 and added the restoration costs, I'm already past what I could buy a restored unit for on eBay.

That air pump is pretty cool !!!Where would you even get repo chrome pieces for that ???

I'd like to get one of those for my garage as well.

Found this one:
http://oldgas.server272.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=74959

Probably the closest approximation to the other one, condition-wise.
And the attached picture is the same model of pump (Gilbarco 906) restored.

The ECO air pump: I found it on the ground out behind a house when I was buying a 1960 Ford Ranch Wagon. The owner used to own a service station. Like I said, I gave him $20 for it. Restoring it was pretty easy. I was living in Edmonton at the time, and there is a business there that actually sells restored gas pumps and the like, plus stocks parts for air pumps.

http://www.yelp.ca/biz/service-station-nostalgia-ltd-edmonton

This morning, I noticed that there is a company on eBay that sells a complete restoration "kit" for air pumps:

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/ECO-AIR-METER-7201-SEVEN-PIECE-CHROME-SET-FREE-SCREWS-/370476017988?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5642176944

Not long after, I found another air pump, on the ground again, behind a Honda dealership (that used to be a gas station). I brought it inside and asked about it, and the owner just gave it to me for free....so I gave it to my friend Doug Lepak (The Steering wheel guy).

IMO at $500 its its current condition is more than a fair offer and you should stick to your gun's on that. I too am looking for an "Eco" air pump although thet too are very expensive. One day maybe you I will score one like the one you bought, restored and posted here. Good luck on the Pump. :2thumbs:

You stole that airmeter, that's worth a few hundred bucks unrestored.
You can get a lot of parts for old gaspumps and airmeters at www.vics66.com

working in the oil and gas field for 43 years i handled a lot of gas pumps and signs. i saved three of the signs a coke machine and a lot of the pump signs.one time i had 70 pumps on the truck that i had to take to the dump. the red atlantic sign is worth the most.

The old pumps are cool.   :coolgleamA:

I have to rebuild my 22 year old, tiny 8'x8' shed later this year. Instead of a free standing shed, I was contemplating a small addition on the side of my garage with an overhang that mimics the front of an old service station. The plan is to put a pump in front of it so I've been looking at old pumps at swap meets. I know I can't afford one so I was thinking about building a replica. I've already found a handle with the trigger from the old pump at work, & a black hose in the right diameter, so I'll have to see what else I can scrounge up.  :shruggy:

Unless I stumble onto a real one dirt cheap, I just can't buy one.

That is an option.
Personally, I like the looks of an old pump, but it's purely an aesthetic interest. I care not if it's actually functional.
In fact, if the case contains nothing for inner workings that's a plus for me as it would make it infinitely easier to manhandle about, and I'm no powerlifter!

Perhaps that is why there are companies that produce and sell fiberglass replicas of vintage gas pumps!

I know its an old thread, but............ I'm restoring a 1957 Bennett gas pump and i would like to operate the meter by using an electrical motor. Has anyone done this before? if so, i would like to know what type of motor and what RPM motor? Pics would be awesome.
