did he say the filter fit the box?

Good point. I guess I assumed it fit as he never said it didn't fit.   :slap:  If it doesn't fit the box then it being a repro filter would be more probable for sure.

I have a couple of NOS originals (No - not selling - already ear-marked for cars   ) - I'll take some pics next time I'm near them. Is it the flash - the color looks off.

Jim the color you see in the photos is accurate to what you would see in person. The box was in absolutely perfect condition when it arrived. The shelf wear you see on it is from me handling it. It's just so different from others I have seen. However I can't imagine someone making this on their own, even if they could sell it for almost $600.00. My thought was maybe someone has mass produced a bunch of these as reproductions but is trying to sell off the first few as NOS and get more money for them. The filter looks absolutely brand new. It even smells new on the threaded end!

I am not suggesting anything one way or the other.  But my impression of the box, is that if it is super nice,  it's a weak link.   I would expect to see some shelf wear.   A good example I can think of is that you can buy a real nice reproduction box for your old Corgi or Dinky toy.    Printing technology would allow a box to be made pretty easy.

About 15 years or so ago, I was offered a case of original green filters ( $1000 for the case) and in this case all were still in the original box. I want to say it was a case of 12 or maybe 10 . There were a few of them that showed wear , But most of the filter boxes and filters looked brand new . It was at the Mopar Nats in Indy back in the mid to late nineties  time frame.
So just because this box shows no wear, I for one wouldn't rule it out as an original.

About 4 or 5 years ago, Mopar supposedly was tooling up to repop this filter but sadly it never made it into production. Maybe this is one of the test shots for that project ??????

No question, it would not be impossible to have a minty-mint package.

So does the filter fit the box, or is the box larger than the filter?
If the box was larger , I think this would indicate someone putting a reproduction in an original box.

The box is the same size as the others I have seen.

What can you do with an NOS oil filter besides display it on a shelf? I'm not knocking it, but really, what good is it? Do any of you guys actually have oil in your cars? Again, not knocking it, just trying to understand what the "original" crowd is about.

Ive come up with an alternate solution to my problem.   :2thumbs:  But not quite as nice as that one that someone shelled out over $500 bills for.

Would the green filter be considered assembly line correct or back in the day(time wise) correct?

resq302

yes assembly line correct up till 1972 when they changed over to the red, white, and blue for 72.

That looks like the ones I have seen before. Thanks Jim. I'm still working with ebay to get mine returned to the seller. The seller insists it is a factory original NOS filter. If so then why is he fighting my return of it to him?

FJ5WING

because of what you were willing to pay?

were you the high bidder or was it a "buy it now"?

For my level of restoration (IE: BUDGET) that item would be wasted. I will be driving much more often than trailering,  :icon_smile_blackeye: until I buy a trailer.....I'll never be trailering.  :smilielol:
wingless now, but still around.

OK, as an observant newbie, I will just say that sometime the story can be too good to actually be true.  I think this could be such a situation.

I base this on Reply #7 by 69hemidaytona that shows a photo of the oil filter base.  In that photo, it is pristine.  Also, in that photo, you can see six crimps of the interior flange.  Now, look at the photo from maxwellwedge Reply #35.  In that photo, the oil filter base is "aged" with possibly even some small bits of rust forming (sorry if I'm wrong about the rust, can't see close enough detail).  In addition, there are no crimps, it is smooth all around on the inside flange.  In addition, the eight holes for the two oil filters are in entirely different locations.

69hemidaytona

Yes there are many differences in the 2. This filter I have not only looks like it was made yesterday but it even smells new by the threaded part. I was the high bidder but somebody else bid just $10.00 less than me. If the seller wanted to he could accept return of this filter and sell it to the second highest bidder. The fact that he is fighting the return with ebay so badly leads me to believe he knows it is a reproduction. I wonder if we will see more of these for sale soon.

FJ5WING

I hope youre able to get things right!

do you think you can give us a heads up on the seller so we can avaoid the same problem youre falling victim to?
