Not a aficionado of 500s, so are they all coded V88 for the tail stripe , as they all come with it?
And is it always color coded to the interior?

All C500's are supposed to have V88, just like the Daytonas... Or, I should say Daytonas are just like C500's since C500's were 1st..  :icon_smile_big:

I do believe the stripe color was "supposed" to be connected to the interior color some how...

V88 means to "delete the R/T stripe".   The special 500 stripe was then included as part of the A11 Charger 500 package.

So does the buildsheet won't show any different than V88 either.
Was curious to know how you would know what the original color stripe was.
I think it's the same issue with the Daytonas...

As Troy said, the build sheet does not note the color of the 500 or Daytona stripe.    The only way to know for sure is to have a documented photo of the car, first hand knowledge, or look in the trunk of an unrestored car and see the remnants of the old stripe where it was tucked in around the marker hole.

Great looking ride for sure. Stripe colors are anyone's guess. Can not see much rhyme or reason on cars stripes as of yet. Some match interior others are tri color cars. Exterior, interior and stripe could pretty much be in any combo you wanted.

So could you order a 500 or a Daytona, or was it just buy what was available, since they made only a set number of them?
If not then who decided the stripe color ? Creative?

maxwellwedge

That.....is an age old mystery. There were recommended stripe colors etc. for other (production) cars - even the Birds......never seen any internal engineering or memo's on these cars.

Ok but, not to be augmentative but history topic at times vs factory original, in 2012 the first hand knowledge on very few cars exists today and really only has priceless value to that person or their close friends honestly.  As much as I would love to have a 1978 photo of one of my cars does not mean at some occasion, although likely slim that an owner of a fancy car could or would have changed the stripe color with an original one in the early 70s say.   Remembering the gas crunch impacted these cars too in what was being done to them.  So you buy a nice crusty builder in 1998 with crusty stripe shows likely is what it was I agree, but not guarantee without a shadow of doubt, just part of its history.

In other words hanging any hat on any 1970s-early 80s photos or "sellers first hand knowledge" might help feel better and provide history and intent but may not reflect as sold options. :Twocents:

With that said, what I think does help on some cars appears to me as having clear historical precedence common senses can apply with piecing some history together.  Red cars probably the thoughest, but say a red car with red interior is more likely to have a white stripe and if had black interior more likely would have a black stripe, maybe.  Or a black car w/ black interior more likely white stripe remotely could be red stripe.  Black car with red interior you really thing it could be any color beside red stripe, no do not think so, maybe.  Blue car with blue interior=> either black or blue common, but not red.  Green car green interior, some black stripes but few, but mostly white. A green car with white interior likely is a white stripe etc, etc    I do think the original color interior can help be a gauge of the stripe if not know. :Twocents:

WINGIN IT

Personally I think the stripe should match the interior , in both the case of Daytonas and Superbirds.
I think a  blue Daytona with , blue interior and light blue stripe would be awesome.
Triple black, even better.
I know for the Superbirds it's generally recognized it has to do with body color, but I still think keyed to interior would be better in most cases.  :Twocents:

I am not 100% on this but doesn't the NBBOA-Aero Warriors Club have copies of the Daytona order list that does show some of the cars along with their stripe colors. I had seen part of it but my old Tona was not on there. I guess for some reason it didn't have all of the cars listed like the actual shipping list did.

That would be a good reference, if you ever wanted to check your Daytona/500 original stripe color.

I believe the Daytona shipping list does not contain stripe color info (or even car color), just VIN, VON, SPD, and dealer info. I think the list your thinking of is the Winged Warrior list that had VIN, ext color, int color, stripe, trans, etc. That list was made later and doesn't have every car, and some cars may have already had changes made by the time their info was recorded....
