With the marks on the gears: Cam and Crank both @ 12 o'clock / #1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke / distributor rotor pointing at #1 Spark Plug on Cap

This is correct?

Cam sprocket @ 6 o'clock & crank sprocket @ 12 o'clock with piston @ TDC drop in distributor drive with slot pointing front to back & drop in distributor, then were the rotor points is # 1 in the firing order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

According to field Service manual the timing marks are lined up with each other on the center line between the cam and crackshaft.  Cam gear timing mark at 6 oclock and crank gear at 12 oclock.

don't forget the dist will rotate a little as it slides down into the oil pump drive
