Yes, I read that earlier. He was a legendary coach.....Its hard to imagine Penn St. football with no Joe Pa.

That's like back in the 80's when Bear retired from Bama.....he died a short time later.

Let's not go down this road.. And for the record, he did report it to then-Athletic Director Tim Curley and another university executive, Gary Schultz.

Enough...........

If I remember the reports correctly, he did not witness it. He was told about it and then he in turn told the higher ups, which did nothing.

Guys,   reported it? Come on are you kidding. He was fired for doing the right thing I guess? If you knew a member of your team was molesting kid's and you reported it and it went no where, would you continue to work with a person who molested kids, esp as his boss??? Tell that to the kids parent's. Please....  enough is right. I'm done

I'm with the new guy on this one.  Anything less then personally making sure that castration or incarceration happens to someone in you organization doing such horrendous acts is too little.  Great football coach, bad human coach.

Thank you! I do agree with you guy's as he was a great Coach, no question, however he and everyone should always go the extra yard to protect children at whatever cost's and or embarrasment it may cause to the School and or Team. Protecting kid's comes before Sport's or anything.

when you are in a position as he was you have a chain of command. when something is reported to you, as was done by the guy who witnessed, you get that info.he did not see the actions, so at that time it is hearsay. he reported it to the person in charge. ala chain of command. to put all the responsibility on him for the actions of a pervert is stupid.mabey more could have been done, but the guy says he didnt do it and another guy says he did. joe reported it. it was up to the head of th athletic department to make the call. it was the responsibility of the head of the athletic dept. to follow up and see that he was suspended or fired.

I grew up in State College PA, on Joe Pa football, I worked at the games when I was in high school and we as employees of the games could walk the sidelines. He was a great coach and a good man and I will miss his presence in SC. It is with great sadness that he is no longer with us.   :'(

I'm sorry however my feeling is yes he could have taken 5 steps further when it was known his Assist. Coach was dealing with Children in a Criminal way and was known to have been going on for years. Chain of command sounds nice when it comes to B/S however when it comes to kids all bets are off. He is not solely responsible as all of them named were however he was Head Coach and his Assist Coach was taken shower's with same sex Minor's and continued for years. Best way to sum it up is.......Would you feel the same way if it happened to your Children??? Hell no. All who knew about it and did nothing should rot in jail and RIP my *ss. Sorry there are no excuses for any of the People involved.

Do you all a favor? My friend, there was another Member above that agreed. This thread like all threads are posted and folk's have the right to respectfully state their opinions, feelings, etc and because some disagree with one another does not mean someone should start another post. Personally I did remove myself from this tread out of respect for the Member that posted it.  :2thumbs:

When he was fired from his job I was reminded of a line from an old movie, " Like Prometheus, they will chain you to a rock, where your own greatness will gnaw you."

bull

Joe himself admitted he screwed up by not persuing the Sandusky allegations further so raking the poor dead guy over the coals about it is pointless. Personally I think firing him was a bit of an overreaction and if he didn't know he was in the wrong a year ago he definitely was schooled on the topic just before he died. In this case there's a big difference between an honest mistake and knowingly protecting a pedophile, and in Joe's case it seems like an honest mistake. He was an old guy with an old-school mentality and I think he believed he did the right thing by alerting his superiors.

At my age, knowing what I know, I'd have nail-gunned Sandusky's ball bag to the wall to make sure he stayed put til the cops came but Joe's generation is different. I think guys his age expect their employers to share an equal level of responsibility.
