what would it take to place a 426 hemi with 5spd manual transmission into a 1974 SE brougham charger.  the car presently has a 318 engine with automatic on the floor.  has anybody ever did this??  has anybody ever saw one with this combination???  i would love to do it.  i guess it would take some money to do this.

cubic dollars!

the hemi engine will cost you some where around 15 grand, and a keisler 5 speed another 4,with conversion parts, then the upgraded torsion bars, rear end etc-id save your cash and get a 440-Andy

moparguy01

boy that would be a tight fit. like andy said, youll need lots of bucks. youd want a dana rear end, so there 15-1800 right there, 5k for the keisler kit with the pedals and everything you need, 15-20k for the hemi, then youd need to stiffen the chassis of the car which on a 74 is hard to do.

and youd have alot of fab work as well, so if your not too good with doing all your own fab work, theres alot more money.

is it doable? oh yea....but it wont be easy for ya.

Blown70

For the right money anything is possible.  But you will spend a lot to get that all done.  But hey your money and your car.  EXPECT at least a 30,000 investment minimum.

what fab work would you need?
you could use schumacher mounts and there probably headers availiable that would fit with minimal denting, maybe the frame connectors would need fabbing but i bet you could buy everything else
wouldn't be a cheap swap though, you could have a hell of a 440 for what it would cost
i'd do a stroker if it were mine

hey guys thanks for input - maybe the 440 would be cheaper - still want the 5spd.    if the car has a 318 - is there issues installing a 440???

not to sound crass, but do a search for "sb to bb swaps" and you will find a plethora of information on this site.  Just dont want to have to rehash all the previous said knowledge, cool?

Not too many.  Much better than a hemi....swap in.

Doesn't the 3rd gen use a different k-frame for big block and small block? It's pretty easy to swap a engine on a 2nd gen but I know they changed motor mount styles later on. The 5-speed conversion is probably the easier of the two but still pricey.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Ya know I think you maybe right.  I have only worked on 68-70's.

71 and 72 use the same k-frame.  not sure tho on 73-74

RD

the 73/74 k members went to the isolated k member design.  the motor mounts are spool type.  the SB and BB's are different and are not interchangeable with motor mounts or engine sizes.

okie dokie, ta heck with the search, here ya go:

to convert from SB to BB on a 73 and up frame you will need,

  • schumacher swap kit
  • 971 oil pan and pickup
  • need to elongate your coil wire
  • new driveshaft or get the original resized
  • new bigger radiator
  • bb fan shroud (sb's and bb's were different because of the 26" and 28" size radiators)
  • some tranny details, but if you are going keisler, then they will take care of that

hope this helps.

try reading "how to build big-inch mopar small blocks" by jim szilagy. It has some pretty wild HP numbers for the 360 with out the price or headache of a BB.

I have herd mixed information on this ,on one side i herd the only the 6cly where the only ones that where different ,and the big and small blocks have the same kmembers,my dad has a factory big block kmember and i have a small block kmember and i could not see any difference i even took a tape measure to it where the mounts are ,i did notice the sway bar was a little ticker.but thats all .

BB and SB are different for 73 + B Bodies.

I've got that book, it only cost me $18 from Amazon.com.  I learned a ton of good info after reading it.
when racing deals fall apart.....you go home, like me.

Here you go.  Aluminum Hemi block, dual disc clutch, Hemi k-frame, Doug Nash 5 speed.  This should be most everything you need.  Just add some heads and maybe a cross ram manifold for some extra sex appeal and you'll be ready to go.
