Crushed Daytona Story True?

This story appeared in the Winged Warrior Newsletter in the late 1970's and I've always wondered if it really happened.  Can anyone confirm or disprove it?   It's really hard to believe this:  There was a Daytona owner who hated the car.  It was in very good condition except for a dented rear bumper.  So he drove the car to salvage yard and sold it for $38, which was the scrap metal value then.  The agreement was that the car must be crushed.  There was a guy there who begged him to sell it but the owner wouldn't as he was determined to crush the car, so it was. 
The who, when, and where details weren't stated in the article -- just what happened.  I really hope this is  one of those stories that gets started and passed around.

It could be true.    We have a similar urban legend around here that won't die.  Story goes that a local service station owner bought a new Superbird for his son and it was so ungodly fast that the father was frightened the kid would die in the car.  Sooooo, he got a backhoe and dug an enormous pit in his backyard, drove the car into the pit and filled it in.
The truth wasn't nearly so glamorous but you know how legends are.

I met a guy whose jealous (of his time always worshipping his car) wife took an AX to the body of his 1966 HiPo 289 K-code Fastback MUSTANG. I saw it, because he wanted to know if I could build it into a convertible or something. I told him to part the car out. He was immediately divorced. That gal's LUCKY she is STILL ALIVE !

The Mike Atkins story is not the same one as talked about at the top of this thread.   I think Dave is right that Francis Burley was the one who chased it down only to be rebuffed when attempting to buy the car.   Both Francis and Mike chased a LOT of wing cars back then.    Mike still has all of his.

     I am reasonable sure a car has gone in a hole somewhere at some point, the stories seem far fetched at times, but always interesting.  One of my parts cars came from a creek bank in Appalachia and at the time the man said I had one wk to come get it because he was backfilling that area for for a bigger yard, somehow he still wanted $75 buck for it in 1987 which it likely wouldn't bring for scrap at the time, I bought it anyway.  Anyway to get to the point, your urban legend made me laugh, this last month a neighbor looking and commenting on my 500, bare in mind he is 75-80 yrs old and "car guy from way back" told me a friend of his was loosing his Daytona to the bank and berried it in the early 70s in his back yard, I have a hard time believing it, however I compelled to find more info on it over time, it might be a nice full sized shop art pcs

The brothers I bought Disco from were selling the matching drivetrain and VIN off of one that was driven off into a quarry and then driven over with a bull-dozer. Upper state NY.

I believe it. I had a 69' charger years ago that everytime I drove it, it costs me something, cash or break down. Finally, one night it broke down on me for the last time and I sold it for 20 bucks that same night. It needed a starter is all. Guy I sold it to said he was offered 16 grand less than a week later and thats the last I ever heard of it.

Don't know anything about the cars above, but I know of a Superbird that was buried  about 10 mile from me. I have been told it was a 440-6 car.

If it's something expensive, there's no limit to what some people will do with it. I caught a few rides in a silver Ferrari Dino in 1973 when I was only 10 years old. I never forgot the beautiful sound it made as well as the cool looking shifter and red interior lighting. Also got to ride in the same owners brand new 440 Magnum Charger. I'm betting thats why I've been such a car nut all my life.
