Hey guys, I think this is actually my first post, but I have been on the forum for a while. Anyway, I have a 1970 Dodge Charger RT with a 440, 8 3/4 with 3.23 gears. I am looking for more punch off the line and I never drive the vehicle on the highway.

My question is, how many of you run 4.56 gears? Are you happy with the change? From what gears did you change from?

Thanks in advance!

I know a guy with an a-bod with a setup like that.............................................. dont! It gets tiresome real quick sticking to roads with a 35MPH spped limit.

4.56 gears are not too fun on the street...   3.91's are about all I would do on a street car - if you need more off the line after that build a stroker   :D

2013 Dodge Challenger R/T - 5.7L Hemi / 6-speed / 3.73 Limited Slip

1964 Dodge Polara 500 - 440 / 4-speed / 3.91 Sure Grip

1973 Dodge Challenger Rallye - 340 / A-518 / 3.23 Sure Grip

terrible one

I agree, 4.56 is strip only in my opinion. Even 4.10 I wouldn't touch for a driver but it was a factory option.  I've got 3.55s and think they are about the best compromise between being quick off the line and still being able to cruise at 75 at a reasonable RPM

Beautiful '70 by the way!

I have 4.10's and like it!

A 4.56 is kinda steep....what is your combo?

I wouldn't got farther than 3.73... 3.55 is ideal to get the best of both worlds IMHO, but if your car won't be a driver or a real cruiser, 3.73 is still acceptable for the street

Switching from a 3.23 to a 3.55 isn't worth the effort IMO. :Twocents:

I did and it worths ;), it is a REALLY noticeble Upgrade, maybe not a GIANT step, but still noticeable, without loose the daily driver conditions and still good mileage

3.55 here, like those... Ok for highway and a bit of "off the line"

So Nacho did you do the swap before or after the new motor?

I agree it will help, but for the cost it is not worth it to me at least.

Besides he said he never drives on the highway & I still would go with a 4.10 & aftermarket 10" convertor.

Back in the day I ran 4.56's behind a 440 and a Hemi. They are an awesome gear but traction is a problem. I would recommend 4.10's for you, this will give your car a real "punchy" feel compared to the lazy 3.23's.
With the 4.10's you'll be all done by about 110MPH but so what?

I run 3.54's and think it's the perfect compromise.

greenpigs

I think some people are missing he doesn't care about driving on the highway.

A 3.55 is the best deal for an all around driver, but if you stay on the side streets by choice then bigger is better...to a point.

Yep, sounds like 4.10's are the way to go. I think 4.56 might get a little annoying from time to time.

Now I would prefer to simply swap the pumpkin/3rd member..... who do you guys recommend besides just Ebay....

Thanks for all the advise!

Yep, I am running 295-45-18 on the rear which measures 28.5"...... :icon_smile_cool:

4.10's and a 28" tire is a good combo imo
:iagree: At 62 mph im reving at 3000, that gear is great around town.
68 Charger, slowly in the works, 451 c.i. approx. 535 hp @ the flywheel, so far best time in the 1/4
11.21 @ 119 mph, full exhaust, stock suspension, 4:10s @ 3640 pounds.

DAY CLONA

4:10 or 4:56 is taxing after awhile, esp, if you do any extended hy-way driving...feels like your stuck in 1st gear, I have 3:91's behind my 4spd Challenger....horrible on the hi-way,..Awesome on the street/track

My Daytona has 4:10's with a 28" tire 440/6 but I have a Keisler TKO 5 spd with .64 OD......awesome street performance along with 140-145 MPH top speed, so if an OD transmission is in your future go 4:10's for now, 4"56 with an OD would limit your top speed to approx 100 MPH....killer street gears though :scratchchin:

SFRT

I run 4.56's with a 4 speed.

RULES around town. SUCKS on the freeway.

enjoyment will depend on your driving usage.

I run 4.56's a mild 440 and a 727 with a 10" converter lots of fun around town !  Works well at the strip with 28x10 slicks 1.77 second  60' times and 12.70's in the 1/4 mile.  Don't beat me up too bad the motor is very mellow but it's loads of fun.  Had a '69 with a stock 383 727 i added 3.91 gears with 27.5" tires that was a nice all around car , never made it to the strip .
MOPAR OR NO CAR !!

I have a 4.88 742 rear with Keisler TKO.  Not too bad on a 26" tire - sometimes traction probs on my BFG T/A's.  I can spin the tires in all four first gears...
It's street driven with the occasional hwy drive - 65mph @ 2500 in 5th. Over 4000 in 4th @ same speed... You need overdrive over 4.10 IMO

I am going to step down to 3.55 just for fuel savings and tire life LOL.

I have used 4.56 Richmond gears for 489 for sale if anyone is interested ;)

I used to run 3:91 in a car that I raced every weekend.  I'd drive it 70 miles one way to the track every weekend.  That got old, but I needed the gears & stall with the cam I was running.

Currently have that same set in my Charger but have a Gear Vendors.  Don't know what it's like to drive yet.

May I ask what wheel you're running, bs & size please.  I heard mention of 18 on the rear.   Any other profile pix you may have?

I just wonder what the driveshaft speed is in OD with 4.88 gears at 65 MPH? Geesh, gotta be something like 10,000 RPM...If you got enough motor, you don't need anywhere near 4 1/2 gear...4.56 gears are for engines that are over cammed, single plane intaked, 1050 Carb'd, big tube headered, low compressioned, mismatched, turds.

Yeah, I bet near 10,000...
Like I said, too much for me.  The thing is, I wanted 4.10s but got a deal on the 742 4.88.  I installed it and kind of regret it - my motor is no where near a mismatched turd, so yes I agree - even under 4 is good for me!
