Can someone post a picture of the correct fender tag screws for a 73 (SE if it matters)?
I have a bag full of screws here and need 4 for the 2 fender tags.  And are the body color or natural?
Thanks   :popcrn:

Ghoste

Where was it built?  Most are natural.

so in most plants screws were added after the car was painted, or all plants screws and fender tags were added after paint. i see so many tags and screws that are painted. :shruggy:

70 Duster (Moulin Rouge)
73 Challenger
50 Dodge Pilot House

From what Ive seen, most have one painted and the other natural.

68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .

I thought it was just the Lynch Road cars that had painted tags?

maxwellwedge

Ghoste - Most at Lynch were not painted....Well - not in their inner fenders. They were hanging inside the car (before permanent install) and are found with no paint to a very small dusting.

The rest of the plants (on single tag cars) had it fastened with one screw (and tag "bent-up) and the second screw was installed after paint.

Two tag cars had the tags held down with the middle screw....the two end screws were installed after and did not have paint on them.

I'm geting Alzheimers or something man.  By now I should have that stuff ingrained in my DNA.  I thought Lynch Road had tags installed with one screw prior to paint and all other plants had tags installed after paint.
And of course, by virtue of typing it out i have likely made the wrong info more deeply imprinted onmy tiny brain.  Maybe I need to write it out by hand theother way a hundred times to get it memorized.
Hey, what do you know, all of my teachers back in my school days had it right. :o

   No problem - We are overloaded with all these bits of information!

I know you are asking for 73 but... these are off my 72, and I'm pretty sure there was paint on at least one of them. I guess for now you are just trying to figure out which ones are the correct screws.

this discussion has helped us that didnt know, even if it was a lesson of things long lost for ghoste. you have so much info in that head that some of the little things get squeezed out. :smilielol:

I would have still messed it up but in my defence what I am actually supposed to be doing right now is drawing up parking lot arrangements for two auctions in January (we don't just set those things out randomly you know), and I keep going back to Chargers because they are so much more fun than Porsches and Cords IMO.

There appear to be differences.

Early or late build?
LR or STL?

Whether tags were painted or not varies by plant and by year. It's hard to make sweeping generalizations.

This is just from what I've seen from that part of the year on STL cars: typical round headed fender tag screws. Left side painted. Pic is for example only. :Twocents:

I've never seen the screws with a drill bit end on them. Was that a 3rd gen thing? Changeover? Whatever the assembly line had on hand that day?

Most I've seen were also one painted, one natural, but I guess it would also depend on the plant.

Isnt that just how the paint filled in and its a normal Phillips tip?

Charger-Bodie

I think Bill is talking about the other end of the screw Ghoste.

Oh the self tapping part.  Okay, got it now.

bill440rt

Yep, the drill bit/self tapping end. Never saw that on fender tag screws before is all. Just wondering if it was a year change, plant differences, just what was on the shelf, etc.

might be a later model thing,,, as I've never seen that style used on fender tags  1970 and earlier

The picture I posted was from my 7/71 Lynch Road built 72.

Which is why I asked about the plant and production time of year. Notice the difference in the head design? Those look like they have a flat side to them before the actual head where the STL screws are the traditional round head.

Lots of differences between Lynch and St Lou!  They assembled the front bumper brackets a bit differently as well.
St Louis installed ALL the nut ends up, Lynch Rod did half up and half down.
Thanks for the info.
