Gas cap trim ring reviews and questions

I'd like to get some reviews on these gas cap trim rings you see here and there. BE&A, Ebay and Year One have them for $40 (probably all made by BE&A) and PG Classic has them for $30, with no part number I assume.

Are they a decent quality part? Any problems?

Also, I don't see anyone making gaskets for these rings; are they being made? What were the originals made out of?

Did the ring originally sit all the way down against the paint or was there a gap between the ring and body?

BigBlockSam

hey

i bought the year one ring and i wasn't happy with the chrome .

on my 68 the ring fits flush to the body . on my 69 there is a little space .

Bought the trim ring and gas cap from BE&A at Carlisle. I thought the quality looked excellent. Can't tell you how they will hold up to the weather, they are still sitting on a shelf in the shop.
I have bought numerous parts from BE&A over the last few years. Great quality and customer service.

Hey Bull,
Yes, there are gaskets for the rings and yes, they are being made. The gasket is basically a thin ring made of styrofoam material (that's what was glued to mine originally). And the one for the tube should be a foam material. Check with Detroit Technologies (?) for the gaskets. Use contact adhesive to attach it.

I installed a repro (non-B/EA) on my '69. I can't speak for the B/EA pieces, but compared to an original the other repros are, not surprisingly, different. The ridges were not as sharp on the repro, and shaped ever slightly differently. Chrome was decent, probably on par with an original one. Fitment was decent as well.

Once you snug down the screws, the gasket will compress and the ring will sit nearly flush with the body. I don't think the ring should "squeeze" down against the paint, but it should be flush. Hope that describes it OK.

Ok, I remember now about the gaskets. I got this kit from DT so I' m covered. http://shop.detroitmuscletechnologies.com/68-Charger-PAINT-Gasket-Set-BCH6868PK01.htm Thanks. :2thumbs:

I might try the PG Classic ring and on Tuesday I found a place to call for a source of new original style security screws to fit the cap/ring/neck. We'll see how that goes.

I've been very happy with the flip cap and trim ring from PG Classics Bull.
The chrome still looks great after near on 5 years.
I reused the original foam gasket too.
Gotta love a '69

Bull, I got my trim ring and fliptop cap from BE&A and I'm very happy with it. The chrome is excellent.
I tossed the styrofoam gasket and instead cut one out of 1.2mm rubber so the whole trim ring rests on the rubber gasket and doesn't make contact with the paint.

Is there still an issue with the pop open spring in the repro gas caps being notoriously weak?

Mine pops good.
If I can only keep the friggin' gas station attendants here in Jersey from touching it I'd be happier. We need self-serve gas laws here in NJ bad.  :yesnod:

Bull, talk to Chris Just6T9 here about the special screws. IIRC, he had a bunch, including the special socket for them.

I already got four from him but they're bigger than they're supposed to be. But I found a source for the correct size a few days ago and I'll be giving that place a call tomorrow.

Not with mine. That spring is really strong, not having any problems with it...................and I fill up a lot!

Is just your ring bad?

I got lucky and the whole works cleaned up good enough......pretty nice for 40+ years old.

(I know you are asking about repo stuff , but I know you'll forgive me if I post PICS! ;))

All I need is the ring. A few years ago I found a very nice original cap on Ebay that was being sold close to where I live. The guy had been using it on his boat for 20-some-odd years and it was always stored inside.

I got the trim ring from a guy on Ebay and installed everything. Turned out looking pretty good. :2thumbs:

The cap itself is a good used one. The trim ring and the locking cap are both reproduction parts.

Where can you get the repro locking cap Bull?
Any links?

I don't think the little lock is factory, but an aftermarket item to prevent people from stealing your gas.... or petrol on our side of the world...

There was a thread on them here a while ago so it should be under search.

Edit: I just did a search and am wrong... Looks like it is a mopar item...

doctor4766

I do believe they were supplied when the cars were new, MOPAR or aftermarket I'm not certain.
I do have an old one that I had rekeyed when I found it in the trunk without a key, but just the other day I had just filled up and when I went to refit the cap it just about fell into the filler tube. Never happened before...
Had to stuff around to get it out without it falling into the tank but now I'm thinking maybe it's a little worn for it to have slipped past the opening on the neck.

Above is that link to Layson's, which is the only vendor I know of that sells them. That's where I got mine. You kind of have to fish around that site to find it but after you punch in the year/make/model it's under Fuel > Fuel Cap Components > Fuel Locking Caps For Flip Top Cap.

i thought laysons was alot cheaper than that :icon_smile_blackeye:

No, that is about what I paid at MATS last year from Laysons. Works well, though.  ;)
