I am in the middle of swapping out my 8 1/4" rearend for a newly rebuilt 8 3/4".  I have a 7290 yoke.  The guy at the rearend place sold me a Spicer 5-527X u-joint.  But after I pulled the driveline out to check it.  It appears to be way too big. ???  I called him back and he assured me that it was the right part.  And that Spicer has really tight tolerances.  And it would be a snug fit.  But it looks like there is no way that it would fit.  Does any one know if this really is the correct u-joint?  If it is not, does anyone know the correct part # I need?

I attached some pics if that will help.

Thanks!!

it looks like the other 2 caps would fit if you rotated the joint 90*
are you trying to connect a 7260 with a 7290 ?
what is the other yolk size ?
putting it in the way you have the pic is definatly wrong

What size joints do you have on your drive shaft.  I have never heard of anything other than a 13xx for Spicer.  There are only a few companies that make conversion u-joints too.

I suggest taking your driveshaft, and the U-joint to the shop and asking the guy how it is supposed to fit if it isn't the right part.  It should slip right in no problems, assuming that you have already followed Chryco's advice.

Chryco:

Yes if I turn it 90*degrees it seems like it would fit a little better.  But it would still be a tight fit like pic #2.  I would have to tap it down in.  I am starting to think that it is a 7260 yoke and not a 7290.  I measured it across and it measures 3 1/4".  I was told that if it was a 7290 yoke it would measure almost 4"? The 8 1/4" rearend I just pulled the yoke on it measures 3 1/4" across also.  Did they use a 7260 yoke on 74' Chargers with 8 1/4" rearends?  I measured the caps up against each other.  The new one and the old one.  They are the same circumference.  It almost looks like the old u-joint might have worked just fine.  It was a little tight like pic #2 but it sat down in a little better.  Not all the way down but better.

Rocky:
If I can't figure it out.  I just might have to as you suggest.  And take it down to them.  You would think that those guys would know.
