Hi all, I have a 66 hemi 4spd and after driving it for a while it has to cool down before it will crank again. I have had this issue since I got it in 96 and am tired of waiting for it to cool down. I have had a few different batteries in that 15 years and had the starter rebuilt once. even wrapped the header to try and keep it cooler but still acts the same. I have looked into a high torque starter but all say they won't fit the hemi 4spd in 66-69. Any one combat this issue or know why the 4 spd is different that the auto. Any suggestions would be a start.

Its the flywheel, it has 172 teeths and the starter is a direct drive 1966-69, I bought a 143 teeth flywheel and a Lakewood bellhousing "because my original had 2 cracks" atnd that combo allow me to use a high torque starter.

Gee that seem like an expensive hassle. Did you bypass the starter relay also somehow? Did all the parts just bolt up?

Mallory makes an improved starter for the '66-'69 4-speed Hemis, their part number is 3008...it ain't cheap.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

John_Kunkel, I googled the number with Mallory and didn't come up with anything. I would like to see what I can find on it. Even if it is expensive its going to be cheaper than a $300. flywheel, $500. bell housing and time going in it to change it over.

My flywheel was gone and my bellhousing was cracked thats why I choosed 143 teeth, a Lakewood bellhousing and a Centerforce clutch, Maybe you can make an extra heatshield to protect the starter from heat?

68RED4SPEED That's a great looking car in the picture.

Mallory has discontinued that starter. But the other place Robb MC performance has them. In talking with him, he is the guy that actually designed for Mallory. It is a gear reduction direct mount for the 172 tooth hemi 4 spd. Any one reading this who needs one here is the link http://www.robbmcperformance.com/products/hemi_starter.html. It a'int cheap but less than a new fly and bell set up. If my flywheel was bad and all that I would have gone the same direction as 68RED4SPEED did. Just makes sense. But I just replaced the flywheel, clutch and all the other stuff 2 years ago so I think the starter will be great. It has 75% more power and an optional nose cone support plus able to rotate 180 deg. so mounting the cel away from the header will be better.  Thanks 68RED4SPEED and everyone else for the support.
