VERY cool!! We bought (2) 40' containers about 6-7 years ago for $1k each.. The roof leaked, but at the time it didn't matter. VERY creative idea!!!!

Did a little research afterward and found some where they stacked them and added a 2nd floor.

thats a great idea. 2 on bottom and 1 centered on top like a pyramid. spiral staircase to the loft. great idea.you would have a walkout sun deck up stairs

Ive seen people almost give those containers away, just cause they are unfortunatly losing their homes to default.    Check craigslist.

Someone at work showed me that. Very cool idea. I think I would stack four of them on a hillside with the lower two half buried - daylight basement style - and use the bottom as the garage with the upper deck at ground level in front. Also, I would be tempted to buy some rafters so the roof would have a peak. Not a big fan of flat roofs.

I recall seeing a cool website that had some elaborate home designs based on shipping containers, but I can't find it.

And speaking of ugly container type construction, check this out, it's the Orange County Government Center where I live in New York. It's concrete, but if you squint your eyes it looks like shipping containers stacked up.

It was built in 1967 & supposedly an award winning design at the time. It's currently closed because of storm damage & has been plagued with leaks, mold, & basement flooding. I've been in it & it's the biggest waste of space & hard to get around in. Damn architects on acid.

Ya, I was thinking burying three sides may make it more comfortable for summer use.

A small version of one of those outdoor pallet furnaces would a good heat source and conserve space.

I wonder if you could pick up a little more space by turning the studs sideways and using the spray foam insulation? You could probably heat it with lightbulbs using that stuff.

That turned out pretty nice for a couple of modified shipping containers, I had a couple I used for storing construction materials for some auto dealerships I was working at, they are hot as hell in the summer & cold as the Artic in the winter & all of them leaked, they all had hardwood oak floors, I also had fluorescent lighting & ventilation fans installed in mine, you could insulate them & add a 4 in 12 or 6 in 12 pitched roof pretty damn easily, they are made to be stacked, it could be a 3 or 4 story building pretty easy, weld them together, with some planning or forethought & a foundation of some kind so they don't sink, I don't think here in Calif. they would approve too many use permits, occupancy permits or housing type projects using them for living in though, with out some serious engineering & drawings...  Cool "Cabin" idea though for sure a couple of windows, some silicone, a fan, a toilet area, a sink, a counter, a heater, an awning, some insulation, some bunk beds, a propane stove, a fridge, a generator & your set...
