My older brother passed away recently.  Back in the late '70's our Grandmother left us a small oil Royalty that we were suppose to split when the monthly check came in.  Being that the amount was only several dollars, my brother suggested that it wasn't worth the time or effort to send my half every month.  The checks were made out so either of us could cash them without the other having to sign.  I agreed with him on the condition that if the amount ever became more than "pocket change" that we would have to begin splitting it.  I mostly forgot about it. but did bring it up once or twice over the years and the response was always "it not enough to worry about.  Fast forward to yesterday;  I get October's and November's check sent to me by the his widow with a note that I should get the address changed to mine.  Come to find out these checks are now anywhere from $150.00 to $250.00 a month.  I don't know what the average would have been over the decades, but DAMN!!!  Not that that amount would have made any difference in our lives over the years, but, the ASSHOLE stole from me for over 30 years and had the opportunity every 30 days to do the right thing.  I know this isn't the best place to vent on this, but I do consider you guys like family.  NO, better than family, mine anyways.   Bob

I always say the difference between my family and complete strangers is that there is a chance a complete stranger will do something nice for you.

Sometimes I'm glad the only inheritance that's ever existed in my family has been bills, debt & broken appliances.

Nobody ever fights over them.

Well, at least he wasn't an obvious asshole. :shruggy:. My psychotic sister-in-law likes to spout off about how everyone is out to get her and we all want her mom's money for ourselves and everyone is a pedophile or a murderer or a member of Al Qaeda and everything is a conspiracy, etc., etc. :image_294343: She's a friggin' head case but too paranoid to realize it and deal with it.

She's been a PITA for years but she recently went silent after a couple of big confrontations. It will resurface one of these days. During this downtime I think she's working toward her PhD in Bitchology. I know she's really going to go pro and make everyone absolutely miserable starting the day her mom passes away. I'm sure she will be giving my wife and her brother death threats, filing lawsuits, stalking us, cornering us with red-faced, bug-eyed shout-downs, etc.

Sorry for your loss Bob.  It's still family.  That said I guess I'd let it go and move on  Nothing you can do about it now.

My experience has been that inheritance issues will make normal people into loonies. I've seen it first hand. Sorry that you seem to have personally confirmed that yourself.

Well, he was an obvious asshole when my Mother passed away in '03.  He lived in the same house and somehow things that Mom had wanted me to have went missing along with her Will.  He started having yard sales within days of her death and notified me of a small memorial they had for her AFTER IT WAS OVER! :brickwall:  Now when my wife lost her Mother that was ugly.  It was a sizable estate and her little brother felt more "entitled" than what the trust called for.  Long story short, he now is sitting on a pillow somewhere in Asia and will not communicate with us.  A good thing.  Inheritances suck.  They drive families apart.  Either spend it all or leave it to charity and make sure your kids are aware of it.  If they have "expectations" of future money they tend not to be real productive people.

Not to get too far off point, but I've made sure that I have a copy of both my parent's wills, and my heirs have copies in hand of mine. Just so there is complete transparency.

When anyone in my family dies, the others can have the 'stuff', they can empty the bank account and fight between themselves over every single penny.  I'll keep the memories, good and bad.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Sorry for your loss, & I know how you feel. When dad died in 01, took 9 years for the rest of the family to start talking to him. For me blood is more important then money. And sometimes strangers do treat you better.

Yep.....ain't family great!

My uncle lived in a house behind my grandmother who owned it (the house was my great grandparents when they were alive). He lived there rent free for three decades.......never paid anything to his mother.

When grandma died he got the that house, the land, an empty lot next to the house and 1/3 of my grandma's house when it sold.

He saw nothing wrong with that. :eyes:

I wouldn't put up with it if my sister tried something like that. Never had to deal with this but I would forget they are a sibling and treat them like any other person. So if they hose you then do something about it just like you would if they are a total stranger. How ugly it gets depends on just what kind of person they are. :Twocents:

Sorry for your loss, family can be the worst about money and what is right and fair at time of passing and wills.  i agree multi-copys of will and let all know who gets what.

my gramma remarried a great ,friendly old guy his kids were so bad to her,he wrote them out of his will. the day he passed that night his 3 kids showed up with pickups and trailers.they loaded up garage and shop tools, yard stuff.went in house trying to get tv's and guns and safe.her son got there and blocked gate till the cops showed and made them unload everything.the stress and timing was almost the death of my gramma, she sold out and moved to house close to her son and his family.  family can sure suck.

well hope your healthy and live many more years so you can get the checks for a long time to spend on what you want now.   take care spend some on car and enjoy the ride...dj

Money makes families go mad. Better to let others squabble over cash and "stuff" and yourself be blissfully happy. My mom once said she was writing me out of her will and I replied "thanks for saving me from the headache". That probably made he mad her mad enough to really do it, and I'm fine with that.

Well, so much for that theory. Sounds like he was a prick all the way around. People amaze me. It's just incredible how they go through life expecting everything in return for doing nothing more than being who they are.

Sorry to hear that,  When ever it involves money I always try and do things on paper and spelled out no matter what or who its with, Family will be the first to F you when it comes to money or family situations.

Sorry for your troubles. It's a very bad way to end a relationship. I hope you will find peace with it soon.
