Is there any cordless drill/impact driver out there that will undo lug nuts?

bobs66440

This one got pretty good reviews mostly and it says it will do 1,959 in/lb (162 lb/ft) torque. Others spec up to 200 lb/ft. Most lug nuts should only be around 80-90 lb/ft so it should do the trick. Unless, of course, you take your car to a tire store like the one I go to. If you don't tell them to torque the lugs on, they ram them on with their air impacts from hell to about a billion lb/ft of torque where no human can get them back off.  :flame:

I would shop around and read reviews, but I wouldn't expect miracles from anything cordless. They rarely live up to expectations. You get what you pay for...

The key is you need an impact wrench. :2thumbs:

This one will.  The first ad I listed is just the unit, no batteries or charger.  Buy a combo deal and get the whole setup.  I have it and use it frequently.  It will do everything but the lugs on my F-350 which are set to 140ft-lbs.  I disassembled nearly every bolt on my '68 project with it and I love it.

Alone, no batteries or charger

Combo: 2 Li-Ion batteries, a drill and charger

Or if cash is no problem, this one is the BEST.  I have used it and was really impressed.

Would this cut it (Christmas present):

No way. You would need at least an 18v impact unit with 3/8" or 1/2" drive IMO. And I would go with 1/2" if it were me. I assume you need this for removing lug nuts in the absence of an air compressor? Because an air impact gun would be better. People tend to install lug nuts much tighter than they need to be. Charger lug nuts are supposed to be torqued to 75-85 ft. lbs. but they're usually much tighter.

I have three kinds of Milwaukee M12 (12v) cordless tools that are great for small fasteners up to about 7/16" and 50 ft. lbs. of torque. They are great tools but I would not bother using them to remove lug nuts. I have used them to assemble most of my Charger because they are small and light but I always follow by hand tightening to the proper torque (if I can find the spec).

For doing bigger jobs I'd use something like this:

suntech

Makita has a 18 Volt one that does the job, the only downside is that it has no variable speed.......just on/off

this one has variable speed, but not as strong, but has fully variable speed, and strong enough for most stuff

Got them both, and happy with them. The biggest one actually loosens the lug nuts on the dually.
Since we only live once, and all this is not just a dressed rehearsal, but the real thing............ Well, enjoy it!!!!

I have the C3 Craftsman units...two of them, actually...one for home, one for work...you can buy the gun itself if ya want...without buying other items...then you can buy the batteries & charger....

Last time I bought these was about a year ago..gun itself was about $70....and the charger with 2 batteries was about $100
