What's it worth to keep the original drive train?

There is a really nice looking '69 Charger on ebay  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/?cmd=ViewItem&_trksid=p3984.m1426.l2649&item=140636553811&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

It was originally an automatic 440.  Now a 5 speed 468.  Seller has the original numbers matching engine & transmission which can be bought separately.  Apparently both work fine.  Would be a shame to permanently separate those from the car, but he's asking $4000 for the engine/trans.  That seems like quite a bit to me for something that probably needs rebuilt -- but just curious -- what do a stock 440 and trans that need rebuilt go for?

700.00-800.00 or so. Matching # only to the car it's from, who knows?   :shruggy:  4k sounds high to me.  :scratchchin:

I was asking less for my '68 HP440 with Stage IV heads and Hemi trans housing, built and no rebuild necessary.

I think it come down to how much do you want to have the original engine & transmission, "they are only original once", if you have plans to ever restore it back to factory original specs & have it be a "numbers matching restoration", it's pretty much priceless... The engine & transmission alone in stock form aren't worth any were near that $4k, if you pay the near $30K-$50K price in today's market, you should be able to negotiate price on the extra parts, for the car....  The car looks like it is a nice car, very clean looking, are you willing to pay the price? To some people it's got to have the "Numbers Matching" equipment, to me unless it's a really rare car engine transmission combo, it won't make a really big difference in price, unless it's a concourse 100 point restoration....  :Twocents:

To separate the original driveline into obscurity that's numbers matching for the car on an R/T no less is a pretty dumb move, IMHO. It should stay with the car in the sale.

They're not worth $4K stand alone, but if they're original to the car it might be worth paying that in case someone wants to return it back to original/matching numbers.

Heck, even on my base model '68 that I swapped a 440 into, I still kept the original 318/904 trans.

That is an awesome Charger, it would be nice to have the original drivetrain, but for the price it should be included.  That car is listed online for $58K.

4k alone, no.

But 4k and having the car they came out of is a different story, they add quite a bit of value to the car...installed or not.

No doubt! I have passed on cars w/ "NOM" vs. #s matching and the price difference was MUCH more than $4k  :yesnod:

Sounds to me like the seller is just trying to get more for his car by holding the #s hostage and hoping that his gamble pays off.  :Twocents:

If I ever planned on selling my Charger I was gonna offer it with the #'s drivetrain installed or price it with everything.

Real simple, this guy should pull out the 468/Tremec & put the #'s back in or price it otherwise.

It is a nice lookin' ride, very well put together.

Im pretty sure if someone gave close to what he wants for the car but wanted the origional stuff included that he would let it go.

The automatics could -- and that's what it was originally.

Seller is a greedy idiot - priceless.

Find a better seller.  ;)

The car is beautiful no doubt but it has been mini tubbed and modified far from original. This raises the question do upgrades to systems and changes from stock configuration such as disc brakes and manual transmissions change the value up or down. Unlike the Creed Charger being a true survivor and getting modified this Charger in effect got a partially correct restoration with heavy modifications. I think that mostly takes the true assessed value out of the realm of "book" to something more like what is it worth to me as the buyer. I think in this case the modifications end up reducing the value of the original motor and transmission. (?)
I looked at the ad on eBay and did not see any pictures of the car from underneath, in my opinion there should have been many.

tpetty

The car was relisted after apparently not selling the first go around.  I asked if the seller would take $50k including the original engine, explaining that it would be a travesty to permanently separate them.  Reply was that bottom dollar was $53k -- without the engine.  That's still extra $.

Car ultimately sold -- not to me.  I later emailed the seller, and sure enough, the seller kept the engine.  Good chance that numbers matching drivetrain is forever separated now.

elacruze

Pretty dumb since the engine and trans together are worth no more than any other set separately.

Either that or when the time comes someone wants the origional engine and tranny hes going to want to sell it for a large sum

Ghoste

If the car was dropped accordingly in value for NOT having the original drivetrain then I would say he is in a position to offer it to the buyer of the car for that amount.  But as it is I would say he is just trying to rape someone on both ends.
