i found this photo and description on nhra's website...... author Phil Burgess always has interesting reading and photos of the early years of drag racing....

Al Vander Woude was in on the ground floor of the Funny Car revolution as a pioneer in Factory Experimental, and his Flying Dutchman Funny Cars were a class staple from the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s, first with Vander Woude himself driving and later Tom Johansen and Stan Bowman. All of his cars were of his own design, and for the most part, he personally constructed or supervised the construction of his cars from the wheels up after learning all things mechanical as a U.S. Navy Seabee. Vander Woude was behind the wheel of this topless '66 Dart, shown running in Lodi, Calif. After sitting out more than a decade, the Vander Woude and Flying Dutchman names returned to the dragstrip in the late 1980s with a car owned by his son, Don, and drivers Terry Haddock and Jack Wyatt. The elder Vander Woude died in 2001 at age 67.

and two photos of Tom McEwen's  rear engine f/c that crashed on its maiden voyage..

Yep the 60's were allot different, my step father Bob raced all over the west coast Pontiac's mostly kind of followed Mickey Thompson all over the west, on a Pipe/Steam Fitters budget & income raising 4 kids at the same time, I don't remember any real hardships, but my mother would complain many years latter the Bob spent every penny we had at the time, including the mortgage payment money at times, always made it work though... The mid 60's were great as a kid growing in Calif. up with a racer...   Hell, I make or made probably 5-10 time his income & can't hardly afford to go race any longer, well not like I did in the past anyway...
