Three Chargers were used in the film; Two 1969 Dodge Chargers (one "R/T" and one SE), and one 1968 Dodge Charger. Two of the Chargers were intentionally damaged in the front (after a scene where the Charger collided with the truck), and there is a notable difference in the damage from car to car.

The collision with the train at the end of the film was accomplished by rigging an engineless Dodge Charger filled with explosives to a towing cable that was run underneath the train tracks (the cable and pulley are, in fact, visible in the film). The towing cable was hooked up to a pulley system, and then to another vehicle on a frontage road which towed the Charger into the train. The crash and explosion of the car were actually two separate shots: one was the actual collision with the train accompanied by a small explosion, and the second was a larger explosion of the wrecked Charger staged with the train passing in the background of the shot.

My most favorite movie of all time.  Thanks for the pic of the train wreck location today.  That was really cool.

Drache

Does anyone know where any of the DMCL chargers are?

Also it looks as though that '68 is an R/T as well. Look closely....

THE CHARGER PUNK

if i remember correctly the 68 used was on ebay like 3 or 4 yrs ago it was sold in pieces but was stated as the 68 charger used in dmcl, speaking of which my dmcl dvd arrived at my house 2day, 2 bad instead of being in b.c.,im in quebec on a school trip  :rotz:-MATT

Ghoste

It must suck if you're playing on the internet instead of going out and hunting Quebec hotties.  I lived with a French girl once and everything they say about them is true.  Shut off your computer and go outside!

THE CHARGER PUNK

i am not in montreal but am in a inuit town called umiujaq and yes when i was in montreal lots of hot french chicks ;D its -40 so  i cannot go outside of my hosts home but in the bedroom im in i have sattelite t.v.,internet,big bed and full rights to al the food here and it only costed me $10 to go on this trip ;D-MATT

Ghoste

Wow! :o  Foot in my mouth.  You're quite forgiven.

Sure looks like a R/T indeed

FastbackJon

I always thought they stole the Charger too, but it recently occured to me that they could have bought it with the cash they stole.

Thanks for the screenshots, what program did you use?

FastbackJon

Anyone tried to reconcile any of the maps in the cop station in the movie with any real maps?

Ghoste

Yeah, but so far no luck.

As to stealing the Charger, they already had the car before the crime because they were heading to Dutton Flats specifically to change cars.  And they already had the keys when they walked up to the trunk of the Charger.

Have you located any of the other sites they used in the movie?

NYCMille

Dude... those pics were great! thanks so much for taking the time to post them  :yesnod: Good way to start the morning!

FastbackJon

So what is that odd looking thing that Mary picks up at the Dutton Flats Flea Market? Where the guy takes it out of her hand, and then she bumps into him to swipe it back.

Ghoste

It's the 1920's equivalent to a Wal-Mart auto accessory.  It was popular in the days of external rad fills to have those aftermarket add ons to individualize your ride.  Some of them are EXTREMELY collectable and very highly priced.  I don't think that one is as much as the crystal "mascots" are.  Many of the crystal ones were commissioned by noted artists of the time.

FastbackJon

So what program was used to do the screen shots?

Took the screenshots with "PowerDVD". Just hit a screencap button, and the scene will be saved as *.bpm. After that, to make the files smaler, I convert them to *.jpg. It took me about a hour-and-a-half to make the screencaps, upload them to the internet, and post them.

Some intetesting things to note...

The Non-R/T '69 has the taller front bumper guards.
The R/T '69 has the shorter front bumper guards.

The car that is a '68 from the front and '69 from the back (rams the cop car into the stream) has '69 reverse lights.
The damaged car in the orchard has a '69 tailpanel and no '69 reverse lights (giveaway as a real '68). But this car looks to have a damaged '69 grille in all shots (with only the lower front bumper guards).

Makes me wonder if they used more cars than I initially thought (one '68, one '69 R/T, one base '69), or if that is just some camera fakery going on.  You would think the car with the '68 grille would be the one without the '69 reverse lights in the valance.

"This was the dedication of the altar, in the day when it was anointed, by the princes of Israel: twelve chargers of silver, twelve silver bowls, twelve spoons of gold..." -- Numbers 7:84 KJV

Ghoste

I think it's just the three Jon.  I think the cop in the river scene is filmed twice with two different cars.  The 68 car has a roll bar in it and is used for that stunt.  There are definitely two 69's.  One has extra speakers on the dash and Airtemp stickers in the glass.
I've watched that movie literally dozens of times but I could still be wrong so I don't mind watching it again. ;D

FastbackJon

Anyone know what song that is playing on the radio that Mary is singing along to? Not really singing but more like humming the sounds?

bah-bah

buh-buh-buh-buh

bah

Or something like that?

Thanks for finally finding the train crossing for me. I'm at Travis AFB in Fairfield, and was riding around Lodi and Linden a few months back looking for familiar sights. I was amazed that much of the surrounding areas look the same as in the movie, right down to the walnut groves.

Any idea where the drawbridge was located? I have a suspicion it's on HWY 12 between I-5 and Rio Vista (near Fairfield)

Oh sweet, the pics are back!! :boogie:

Damn, Chargers are some sexy beasts. :drool5:

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

;)  Ohhh absolultley great !!!!!!!! all i got was red Xs a few weeks ago . I just cant believe the clarity of the pics you have !!!!! oh there keepers!!    I so much am ready to paint mine curious  or OSHA yellow!!!!  My opinion is a few can't understand and i dont know how that some think the Charger was stolen, the Charger is(was) the 2nd car, i mean god damit he (Larry) says it inthe movie, watch it ......OK in my Opinion one of the most realistic plots ever!!!!!!!!!!!  :drive: THANKS FOR THE GREAT PHOTOS!!!!!!!!!!!!

440AirForce

I found the train crossing yesterday--thanks to Drache's directions and Mapquest. To my suprise I found the pool hall where they enjoyed their last beer. The inside looks the same, and there is a "liquopr licence" application notice in the window. The location is on HWY 26, about 4 miles from the rail crossing in Linden.

That's just too cool.  Now you have to find the grocery store, the barn where they fixed the Chevy, and the general store where they tried to ditch Mary.  And the drawbridge.

That's cool that the bar is still in that good of shape.
