well i dont know if thats what its called with a 4 speed. i was always able to start the car in any gear ever since i bought it. im not sure how to wire it up. when i turn the key i get nothing. the starter does work. if i jump the pins on the relay with a screwdriver it turns over. im assuming this switch is why i cant turn it over with the key.

would this also cause me to not get any spark?

There is no neutral safety switch on an a833 4-speed, only a reverse light switch. Depending on your year, you may have a clutch pedal interlock switch. We need more information about what you're driving. If you can jump the terminals and get the relay to work, you may have a simple ground fault in the relay or relay ground wire.

its a 69 charger 440 4 speed.

theres also a grey wire that comes outta the engine harness at the bulkhead thats connected to nothing. any idea what this is for?

Tach signal wire, IIRC.

ok ill go try to ground it better and see if that changes anything. if i jump the relay with a screwdriver the starter kicks over, but i dont appear to be getting spark from my coil.

If you've changed nothing since it all worked, you may have a failure in the ignition switch circuit, most likely the connection at the firewall or at the back of the ammeter. Is there anything else that doesn't work with the key? Search the site, there are lots of threads on the bulkhead connector and ammeter circuits.

Look for something very basic and simple then, like a blown fusable link. Follow the power from alternator/battery/relay/firewall to be sure you just didn't fail to connect something.

Grounding the relay won't make any difference if it's an auto trans relay, you have to ground the "G" terminal on the relay. Standard trans relays have the "G" terminal grounded to the case.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

im getting a new relay tomorrow. there was a old cut off connector on the stud. when i tried to remove the nut something inside the relay broke and the stud just flops around. something indise must be broken cuse if i connect the battery the starter just starts going all the time.

1969 cars with manual trans - uses a relay like the one in the lower right of this picture

carquest had the one you have in the pic labled s102. i know thats not the one you said belongs in the car. can i still use it? im not a huge has to be original guy. also if i can do i just leave the extra male pin empty?

elacruze

S71 and S72 are for pickups (at least it's what mine has from original)
S102 and S101 are for cars (our Chargers anyway)

Note that the difference between left and right is that the lower right pin is soldered to the relay case so it can go to ground via the case and screw.
You can use the auto trans relay if you simply fashion a wire to go from the appropriate terminal to ground somewhere, like under the mounting screw.
You could also run the automatic-style relay through a clutch pedal switch to require disengagement to crank.
