I'm not a huge Mercury fan, but I've never seen or heard of a "Lee Roy Yarbrough Special" Spoiler or Spoiler II before this.  Red cars were Cale Yarborough, blue cars were Dan Gurney.

Very cool story & cars... It's sad to here about the guy passing in his sleep, so young, so much to do & great collection of Fords & Merc's & a lone 440 6bbl 4spd Superbird...  RIP & Gods speed

I'm not a huge Mercury fan, but I've never seen or heard of a "Lee Roy Yarbrough Special" Spoiler or Spoiler II before this.  Red cars were Cale Yarborough, blue cars were Dan Gurney.  

The car is a Gurney.    Steve, the owner,  had a local graphics shop make the Lee Roy decals.    He also extended the stripes all the way to the front bumper like the race cars.

Here are Steve's "Lee Roy" and Cale cars at the DSAC picnic last July.    He did both cars with the stripes more forward like the race cars.



Dave Moots' car below has the stripes in the factory position.

i'm not at all mercury savvy, and didn't even notice the length difference. are steve's longer stripes the same as the ones used on a spoiler I? are the spoiler II stripes shorter, to accommodate for the drooped nose?

the lee roy graphics are a neat, personalized touch.

S1 and S2 factory side stripes are the same.   Because of the longer nose on the Spoiler 2, the stripes end up farther back on the fender.

It was very fortunate that I got there when I did.  He mentioned something about the stripes and package I just forgot the details and didn't want to be completely off.  It wasn't much better that I said it was a package.

It does suck.  But I'm glad the timing finally worked out in my favor, even if it was sad in the end.

dont want to get sidetracked, but my Vcoded Bird has the evidence of having a stove. The stove is long gone but I do have broken studs in the manifold.

I spent the today with Ryan,  showing him stuff my friends have stashed.  Unfortunately,  the best stuff is still held "too close to the vest" by some of these guys.  I'm talking killer cars that haven't been outside since the '80s.  After several years on this board and finally getting to know the guy,  all I can say is WOW.  He's only there to document the cars,  no prices, no last names,  no "what if's?".  Just wants to see and photograph the cars.  I brought him by a '70 Charger that I've been chasing for about 12 years.  Owner wasn't home,  or at least wasn't answering the door.  Shoot pix I said,  I've been on this driveway literally a hundred times.  Not this guy. NO he says.  Not without permission from the owner.  Classy guy,  more class than I have. This '70 is chained to the garage door,  completely wrapped in tarps.  But you can tell it has the extra leaf spring on the drivers side and the R/T flares on the door,  someday we'll get the ol' man to answer the door.  I offered a '67 Satellite,  a done car,  really nice in trade one day for it, when he did answer my millionth knock, without even seeing under the tarp. That didn't get me anywhere!
If you have a hoard,  at least let this guy in the door, he's not like me, he's only in it for the documentation.  A great way to start the new year,  we jumped all over the west side of Chicagoland checking out cars.  I'm tired and cold and worn out,  but what a great way to start 2012.  Thanx Ryan.

Wow Bob, thanks.  I had a great afternoon chasing finds with ya.  It was a blast, turned out to be a decent day with some kick ass cars.  You were more then welcoming with the cars you knew about and I know we couldn't view the one big stash you knew about.  But we have time.  So no worries.

beautiful cars. I used to be a Ford-guy, still have a few of them but nothing collectable so I know a lot about those.

I am a little baffled about the "sad ending"---the man had a great life, great collection and passed quietly in his sleep at age 73.. come on, in my family no male person has lived to be over 72 in either side of my family in the last 100 years. for example, my dad died at age 51 of heart failure. so I see nothing really "sad" about this. sorry if it seems cold or whatever to some. to me sad ending would be his grandchild had died of leukemia or something of similar note...

agreed, when i first read the title i thought the son had died in the rolled torino, yes sad that you finally got to talk awhile with him and then he died but, i hope i make it to 73
