Howdy folks-

Didn't know what forum this fell under so I put it here. I'm in the process of replacing several maintenance items on the charger. Radiator, alternator, hoses, plugs, etc. Decided to pull the gas tank today. I noticed a lot of trash in the tank..rusted chips. The rubber gasket that the filler tube goes through is torn as well.

Would it be better to go ahead and buy a new tank? Or do you think it would be wise to have it boiled out and buy the replacement gasket and a new sender?

I'm not even sure if this is the original tank....looks aftermarket to me but I'm new to Mopar so I'm still figuring it out.

Back N Black

Replace it with a new one and that will be one less thing to worry about. New tanks are not that expensive.

maxwellwedge

That's an original. Date code and original undercoat/sound deadener on it.

Yes for a couple of hundred bucks your gas will be swimming in a clean pool.

Surf Charger

Thanks to both of you. Excited to know that it is the original tank. I will say the sheet metal under the trunk floor is perfect...no rust on it or the top of the fuel tank.

I guess I will go ahead and purchase a new tank.

Thanks guys!

Yep, for the money you'd spend fixing/cleaning it out, you'd have less in a new repro tank.

I agree. Hang that sucker up on your garage wall as a momento and get a new tank!

Just be sure to buy a quality tank and avoid the problems of the cheap ones. Spectra tanks are North American made.

Good deal. I found this one:

2 Questions:

1.) Rockauto has two sending units....any idea which one is needed?

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1495028,parttype,4436

2.) Do you know if the rubber ring comes with it? (holds the filler tube in place - see pic below).

I know the ones from Quanta come with the seal ring.
www.gastanks.com

They also carry the sending units, straps, pads, etc. I've had a Quanta tank in one of my cars for at least 12 years now with no problems.  :yesnod:
BTW, the repro sending units will all need a tweak or two to get them to read correctly.

Just a tip: Give the tank a coat or two of clear (Eastwood's Diamond Clear in a rattle can works well). It will keep the galvanized finish looking great for years down the road.  :Twocents:

Thanks!

I keep seeing "19 US GAL W/O EEC" .....so without evaporative control....is that in regards to the return tube from the tank to the filler cap to allow air to flow out of tank when filling it up?

EEC is for California emissions. You'd know if you have it, lots of lines coming off.
The vent tube at the gas cap doesn't go back to the tank. The vent tube at the cap just goes down to the floor and thru a rubber grommet. The vapor return line goes back to the fuel filter/i.e. vapor separator from the sending unit at the tank.

Judging by your pics - Yours is non EEC. The new sending unit (even though it won't work correctly -   ) will be for 3/8" with vapor return line. If your old sender was working properly (showing full when full) I would clean or replace the sock and re-use it.

If there's NO rust inside AND outside of the tank you can maybe save it. Otherwise, get a new one.

BTW do I spot a Corrado behind the BJ? VR6?

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

Thank you for this information. This clears it up completly. I was concerned about the vent tube. I just wanted to make sure it did not connect to the fuel tank somehow.

thanks!

Excellent! Thank yo ufor the 3/8" info...that was exactly what I was looking for as well.

So how come everyone claims the new sender does not work properly? I'm not sure if the current one still works or not. I was just going to replace it to be safe but if it is not going to work properly, theres no reason for me to get one.

terrible one

This thread will provide you with some insight into the sending unit situation: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,57376.0.html.

New sending units are available in 5/16" last time I looked.

As you might notice after reading, you are in a perfect situation still having your old tank, so DO NOT THROW IT AWAY! Use it just like oldcarnut did in that thread to "set up" the new sending unit; this will give you the best chance of getting it to read right.  :2thumbs:

tubedriver

Just pulled mine and had local radiator shop vat and pressure check for 70$, looks almost new after hot tank. Save the bucks for something else.

If you like it and have room to store it then keep it....
Even over here in Europe they're getting rare and the prices for a nice driver are rising pretty high.....
