Interesting point.  Worth mentioning too that likely 98% of new car buyers have no idea how to, are never going to, and are completely unaware of why it would be needed to check some dirty fluid level.

You guys can thank your wonderful Diamler/Benz engineers for this omitting of the Trans dipstick as well as the Engine oil dipstick in Mercedes cars. (Yes, I had to buy a set of "Checker" Dipsticks off the "Strap-On" truck to even check Mercedes cars engine oil)...

Hadda lady come in the other day with a V6 Mercedes that was making a horrific noise. Come to find out, she was stopping at a local "Service Station" and told the "Attendant" that her "Oil Level" light had come on. Of course, the attendant realized no dip stick so he just dumped a QT in for good measure. Light out good right? Well, she did this over a three month period and with no way to check it, added 1 QT every other day for good measure.

Came in sounding like a thrashing machine. Blew up right in the lot. I drained no less than 4 gal of oil out of what was left of the engine. Yeah, German engineering....

Its not the German engineering, its the dumb ass at the gas station and the owner for adding the oil.

Which car is this?
On another note I was checking out a brand new Durango that someone drove to work today. As I got closer to it, I couldn't believe how much orange peel that thing had (I'm painter so I usually check out paint jobs) That thing looked like some amateur at Maaco shot it. Chrysler really dropped ball on the quality. My 01 Ram on the other hand has pretty decent factory paint job. Of course it was built in Mexico, not sure where Durangos are built now.

:iagree:
You'd be surprised at how many people nowadays don't even know where the HOOD RELEASE lever is!!  :o

they also don't realize that "E" on the gas gauge does not stand for "enough"

I swear, every damn car that comes into our shop for service work or runability issues has the damn tank sitting on "E"...and they wonder why the fuel pumps don't last in Chev trucks or Suburbans

Was working on my crusty 1996 Dodge Ram the other day.
Had to drop the gas tank to do some welding/bodywork on the box side.

Got the tank down, and was removing the wiring and hoses. One hose for the pump, the other for vent. The pump hose is a hard plastic job, fitted to a plastic spigot on the fuel pump. If I knew then what I know now, I'd have compressed the fitting (plastic tangs) and just slipped it off the pump. Easy.

Nope, I tried to pull the plastic hose off and....broke the fitting. :rotz:
No problem. Go to the local Chrysler parts department and get another plastic fitting.

Chrysler parts counter Dude says that the fitting is part of the pump, and that'll be $385.00 please. WHAT? :flame:
Uh, no thanks!

Went down to the local NAPA with a picture of the broken fitting on my iPhone.
Yes, I can get TWO of them in a package...for $6.00...for the PAIR!
I now have an extra!
I also bought 1 foot of fuel line and a few clamps for an additional $3.00.

Saving me, what? $376.00?
