Hey guys, I asked this question over at c-c.com and was hoping for a little bit more or a response...maybe someone that's encoutered the problem or knows some one that has? Thanks alot.

I have a few questions regarding buying a car from the US and bringing it to Canada...any help and I'm very grateful because Im kind of in the dark on this topic. I was wondering what type of fees will I have to pay to bring it cross border? Do you have to pay taxes on used cars in the US? Im sure I'm missing some other things so if some informed members could help me out that would be great. Thanks guys.

Geordie.

Not a problem I got my car from canada and all they did was a check of the VIN at the border more like a cursory inspection to make sure it's not stolen. Make sure you have a bill of sale signed by the seller and the title and that's it.

No fees charged but when I regeistered it in Ohio I had to pay sales tax.

Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms should be a convenience store NOT a government agency!

I sold a Charger to someone in Canada a few months back. I emailed him scanned copy of the Title and he gave to customs on Canadian side and he had to wait 2-5 days for them to check to make sure it was not stolen I guess. Once they gave him approval he came down loaded the car and got right through as long as you plan ahead and call the coorect people on your side I see no problem.

Like ipstrategies said, plan ahead! The best thing to do is go to the border guard on the Canadian side of the border with a copy of the title a couple days before you pick up the car. It could take everywhere from a single day up to a week to check to see if the car is stolen. Best bet if you don't live near the border, then go there and camp or stay at a hotel  :icon_smile_big:! They then should give you a form saying the car is ok to bring across. Go down and pick up your vehicle. Remember, you shouldn't have to pay any duties on a classic vehicle, just new ones.

If you are buying a restored/drivable car that you want to insure in Canada the vehicle MUST pass a FULL inspection by your insurance company before they will insure the car t obe driven in Canada. You can go to your local insurance company and most likely get a list of what they will check for so you can make sure all those things are up to code.

Have fun, good luck, and post pictures when you get it across the border!

Thanks for the info ips and drache! That's good news about the no fees for a old vehicle, I thought I was going to have to pay 200 bucks or something along the lines of that...I've made no commitments for a vehicle yet, but I'm pretty sure that my best bet will be purchasing a car from the states since it's pretty well dry of mopars up here...I'll keep you guys posted! Thanks again.

What I meant by no fee though is there should be no duty on classic vehicles or parts. There might be fees to get the paper work processed. It's been awhile since I brought a vehicle up from the states.

I am told there are no fees.
You will have to pay GST on the purchase price.  Do not lie to Canada Customs about the purchase price, as a co-worker just purchased a '70 Challenger T/A and got caught.  $12,500.00 CDN fine!
