Preserving plated plastic parts

Would it be fair to say that it is near impossible to preserve the metalized plastic parts in car interiors?

Other than cleaning & perhaps a very light polish every once in a while, I'm not sure what else you would do to "preserve" them?  :shruggy:

I would think polishing them would be a bad idea.  Isn't that stuff pretty delicate?

 no idea  ,  wonder if the sweat from hands / fingers  does anything to the surface over a period of time  , i say this  because my original arm rest bases ,  mainly driver side  ,  had hardly anyplating  left  ,  but turned them up side down  & were perfect  :shruggy: :scratchchin:

Tan top, that armrest thing is exactly what made me ask the question.  Armrest bases I can get but I worry about the dash bezel, it's an expensive fix.
