Just because the A57 isn't on the fender tag it doesn't mean it isn't a Rallye.  I am going to do a rotisserie on a 1972 Dodge Charger Rallye 440 Hemi Orange car.  It is a true rallye car.  Just look for the obvious as stated above.  The bulge hood and tips on the fender tag.

I like that 74 Charger SE 400 with pistol grip.  Sounds like a cool car.  I have a 73 SE 400 4 bbl, pistol grip, and factory sunroof car.

I love them 4 speed cars.  There is a guy locally here that is restoring a black on black with red reflective stripe 340 4 speed rally.  I just sold him seats and a mint decklid.  He is looking for a triple black charger SE.  Think I might do some trading with him.

That 74 SE 400 4 speed also has a factory reflective stripe.  ;)

I am in the process of purchasing a 72 ralley for my next project it is WH23U2G122947,  unless I am mistaken, W=Charger H= coup 23=2 door coup U=440 2=1972 G=Stlouis mo.  this has the RT tail lights Ralley doors and bulge hood.  Is there anything else I should be looking for?

Husk,

Was that the rallye that was on the trailer in the swap meet for Monster Mopar Weekend?  Or was it the one that TY owned?

Niether, This one is in North Carolina and is petty blue and a pretty major project.  I always loved the ralley and the RT 3rd Gens.  I had a 72 cloned to look like a  71 RT  I sold to finish the 68.  I will start on this one as soon as the Challenger is finished :yesnod:  I won't be able to go pick it up until wrestling season is over in about a month.  I have way to many irons in the fire :o

07161 - Assembly Line #
208791 - Seq. # on Line
807 - this is the engine code (can't find my book)
043 - code for rear end and brakes (again, can't find my book)

Ok you are mostly correct but here is what it exactly means as per what Galen Govier says.
07         Gate Sequential Number
   161    Base Sequential Number
208791  Line Sequential Number
807       Engine Assembly: 1972 400ci 4 barrel V8, Automatic Transmission, Air Conditioning, Color: Blue, 255hp
043       Axle Assembly: 1971-72 B-Body, 3.23:1 Gear Ratio, Sure Grip, 10" Drum Brakes, 8.75" Ring Gear, 1 7/8 Pinion, 7290 Yoke.

What Does the A57 stand for?

A57 was the code for the option package for the Rallye Charger. As it wasn't a seperate model you would get the code on the fender tag. But as Chagerkid already said, nothing can be less true with Mopar. It very well can still be Rallye Charger even if it doesn't have the code. But let's just say that most of em did have the code on the tag.

Anyways this was what the A57 Rallye Package included:
Dark argent grille, power bulge hood with black performance treatment, simulated door louvers, louvered taillights, rallye instrument panel, F70 x 14" WSW tires, front & rear sway bars and the package was not available on the Charger SE.

Do you know what the code 071 is on the top line of a '74 lynch road fender tag? It is right after the line sequential number.

The car is a 400 4 speed so the code must have changed between those years. I cannot make out all of the last six digits but it goes like this

Assembly #      Sequence#     071     189416

I am not totally sure on the "6" as it is hard to read so it may be something else.

Any thoughts on those other codes?

Hmm that is the first time I have ever seen a typo on a Fender Tag.

The code it should be is 701.
701             Engine Assembly: 1974 B-Body, 400ci 1-4 Barrel V8, Manual Transmission, Air Conditioning, Color: Blue, 250hp (High Performance)
189             Axle Assembly: 1974 B-Body, 3.23:1 Gear Ratio, Non Sure-Grip, 10" drums, 8.75" Ring Gear, 1 7/8 Pinion, 7290 Yoke.
416             Transmission Assembly: 1974 B/E-Body, A833, 4-Speed Manual Transmission (odd but what the book says it should be for a 360ci engine, the code for the 400ci V8 is 417. Or maybe the guy that did you tag was only half awake).

Sorry Arthur,

I typed the number backwards in my first post and then kept referring back to the wrong number every time.  It is 701 on the tag. I am positive the last number is not 417, maybe 418. It is funny the car is coded out as a 3.23 open rear. The 2nd owner swears it is a 3.55 gear set and he has owned it since '78...The original owner bought it to pull a boat so he could have had the dealer change it. I hope to be the third owner someday soon.  ::)

No sorry 41husk only the Lynch Road build cars got those codes, and some of the normal cars if you have an special axle package such as a track pack. But otherwise you can't tell it from the fender tag. This only goes for the 69-74 Tags. the pre 69 tags are a complete different bunch.

Mind the fact that it can be very true that the book is wrong on this. The white books are far from perfect even though the part numbers are most of the time much better than the option code books.

Yeah it can very well be changed out by the dealer, they did seem to do quite a lot of dealer changes back than.
