Forgot to mention, while I have no problems what-so-ever with General Lees, what does bug me is when people take '68s or '70s and convert them into '69s :yesnod:

The General Lee is one of the most recognised TV/Movie car out there, for whatever reason.

I guess the joke is that most people relate Chargers back to the GL for the above reason.

Here in Aus when I mention I have a Dodge Charger, most of the time I get a blank expression, but when I add "you know, the General Lee", the light switches on and the instant connection is made. If I said "you know, the Dirty Mary Crazy Larry car" the blank expression would continue.

Whether you admit it or not, you drive the Charger to be recognised and be acknowledged for the car you have, so by making it a GL, you get that instant connection and recognition.

Put a GL next to a Bullit clone and I bet most of the public wouldn't even recognise the stock black car as a movie car but would call out Yeehaa at the sign of the GL

depends on the car , if its a rust up left for dead junker that is getting saved i'm all for it  , but dont start with / take a nice one

:yesnod: thats my thinking on this also !!   can appreciate looking at GL chargers as much as there owners !!  but personally think its madness to start with a pretty straight original  un messed with charger !!  :Twocents:  but  its only a paint job !!  :scratchchin:

I don't buy the unique angle when someone builds a GL, if it is done right it will look like every other GL. At least a non GL will be a different color & have something besides turbine rims. :Twocents:

Do we really need more of these threads? I honestly don't care. GL's don't bother me. It just depends what they start with.

There are PLENTY of projects out there just waiting to be saved. I'd rather see that left for dead Charger sitting out in the back forty turned into a nice GL than just watch it sink into the ground.
On the flip side, there are numerous very nice cars out there which should be left alone.

A GL clone ( as long as it's a '69 charger) dosen't bother me. I say have fun with YOUR car, it's your money .  I had an orange '69 Charger back in the 80s and got alot of "Hey Duke Boys" from people it wasn't a clone just orange. 15x7 s/s style wheels ,replaced the 318 with a 383 ,factory dual point ,avs carb,hp exhaust manifolds a real fun car . Sold it when I got my '68 R/T.

Sure... I've wanted one since seeing one around the neighborhood in 1980 - it was probably one of the first clones of the GL ever made  :2thumbs:

Not a "real" General Lee, or good use of punctuation in their ad. Thanks though

Most people here don't seem to have a major problem with how a car is treated until it is disrespected. Most of you who parrot the saying "it's their car they can do what they want" are right alongside everyone else when it comes to complaining about bozos who park their 69 Chargers under a willow tree for 30 years, HLPAG them or total them in one of those retarded Dukefest jumps. After that the sparse 'owner's rights' sermons tend to fall on deaf ears.

It doesn't bother me, it's their car.  I really don't care to see say a "converted" '68 R/T with original drivetrain or a '69 R/T SE in costume either, although it's just a matter of a new paint job to change it.  What does get on my nerves is that 60% of the people I talk into ask me "where's the 01 and flag?" or "you gonna paint it orange?" or the ever popular "are the doors welded shut?".  I simply tell them no and its going to be painted silver and they look at me like I just slapped them in the face and then they move along. Boy does that get old.

I agree.

To each his own, great, all for it...but yeah, the GL paint job has become somewhat of a 'joke'.  The GL theme has been put on lots of vehicles (Chargers and others) and I've had quite a few people ask me if I'm gonna paint mine orange and put a 01 on it, and then chuckle.

The GL is comical to many people, and I don't like being associated with that.  The classic Charger is one of the best car designs ever, and to me it's kinda sad that many people think 'orange 01' when you mention Dodge Charger.

Every GL clone reinforces the mindset.  People just don't get to see many classic Chargers on the road, and when they do, I'd rather it not be a GL.

I didn't realize the General Lee was such a "joke". Never in all the shows or trips to MATS I have done have I heard anything negative towards my GL. Most of the time I have to excuse my self or I would be there all night talking with people about it or having its picture taken. I have to use special wax to protect the paint from all the camera flashes!

The only negative I ever hear about GL's is on this forum.

HeavyFuel,

What mindset does the GL clone reinforce? Because if your judging me by my car you might be wrong.

Whoa there......this is an opinion/poll post and I responded with my opinion.  Try to respect that.

How did you come up with the conclusion that I'm judging you?

it's funny, but years back when I mentioned building this car to a few friends on the Corvette Forum, I was torn to shreds..

Why do you want to hang out with a group of old people?

Why do you want to be associated with MOPAR people, they are the worst kind of a-hole out there!!

Why would you want one of those heavy old crates?

Why would you want to give up luxury, speed, handling and performance for one of "those"?

Look at the interior on the Chargers, they are horrid. No creature comforts.

And this whole time... I thought it was the Corvette guys being a-holes.. I couldn't have been more wrong.  The last time I saw such a large group of narrow minded opinionated a-holes was when I went to the Democratic convention in town...

Who cares if your car is Brown, Red, Tan, Green or Black .. It's the same f'n car.. Save your hating effort for the ricers.. It's getting old seeing shit like this on a CHARGER forum.
Wow...touchy subject for you, huh?

Kinda....but maybe not as much if Halloween was every day.... because let's face it, the GL is a Charger with costume on.

Meaning this with all due respect, and I understand where you are coming from - but a costume is any form of covering or means concealing or changing an original appearance - soooo, if someone paints a charger a color other than what was put on it originally, changes wheels, personalizes it, puts a wing on a non-wing car, builds an R/T or Daytona Clone,  does that not also qualify as a costume? (and I will agree, the General is a bit more "dressed up" than the type car I have described)

also, in reference to a "flag" comment someone made - this is the part that does hit me a bit - on the show, any person of non-caucasian race was ALWAYS either a person in a position of power (Sheriff Little), or a person of distinguished character - Whether it be a Dentist, Cale Yarborough's crew chief, a state Bank Examiner, etc... just saying.

With everything said, this board is a wonderful resource, and hopefully will continue to be a happy family of owners dedicated to the best chunk of rolling steel to ever hit the highway - regardless of how it is dressed

I agree with your feelings about his site....it's fantastic, and great source for information and comradery.
----------
I hadn't really thought about you one way or another, and a few posts are hardly enough to form an opinion.  But it seems that you're very passionate about your car, and how you've got it looking...and that's cool.
---------
Not everyone is a DOH or GL fan.  The mindset that I referred to is just the connection between a GL paint job and the Charger, and every GL car on the road reinforces the connection between the Charger and the DOH/GL.
Many folks love the orange 01, great.....but I don't really dig it that much and don't like that part of the Charger's history.

I think the subject is beat to the ground. It is mostly cosmetic . They do care about and take care of their cars for the Most part so they are preserving them for the future. As long as someone don't sneak into our garages and paint a 01 on our cars it should be none of our business.

"They do care about and take care of their cars for the Most part"

I agree  :horse: , But are you saying I don't care about my car like someone who did theirs back to factory? If so you are wrong, I take care of mine so well I built the General a 3 car garage and gave him 2 friends to hang out with.
I think you have read more into it than I meant to say. I don't even have a 2nd Gen. It was meant as a complament toward GL owners not a dig at you. Lighten up this is a fun place to visit. I have a 67 and when allot of people find out I have a charger they ask if it is orange and has 01 on the side. At least they know your car is a charger lots of people think the 2nd Gen was the first Chargers built.
