It doesn't bother me what people do with there cars, Chargers or otherwise. Mine is not an exact replica because I wanted to be a little different. I have driven it to MATS the last 2 years. That beats it sitting in my garage for 10 or 20 years because I cant afford to do a full resto back to factory. That would take the fun out it. I only wish the General Lee was a 68 Chevy van, because I would have one and no one would care.  :nana:

I want a DMCL Charger So bad I can taste it. If I ever get tired of the GL.............

Don't like GL clones.

My reason is I never like DoH anyways...

Blade Charger is the coolest
DMCL clones are cool...

Seriously...  Talk about beating a dead horse... What people do with their cars really bothers some people...

here... Have a bowl of cereal...

Start saving now, so that when you see all of the Chargers you DON'T like, you can buy them and rebuild them exactly the way you would.

I figured I would pick up a stick and hit the horse once since everyone else has.  First off if you own a car, you can do anything you want to it....after all you have to live with it day in and day out.  And, just because some don't care for it, doesn't mean that it's wrong or bad.  If we all drove the same Charger...what fun would that be...plus it would be hard to find yours in a parking lot (you know much like it is at a General Lee Meet...LOL).  Personally, I don't mind seeing a General Lee, unless you attend a car show and there's a whole parking lot full of them...just too much orange for my taste.   I actually drove an orange '69 RT/SE back in the day long before the Duke Boys (it had a half vinyl top by George Barris and the tan interior as well).   Besides, you can always bring a General Lee back to "original Charger" configuration by removing the push bar and repainting it.
I am rather surprised no one has brought up the subject of how many '69 Charger RTs have been turned into Daytona clones, or for that matter how many original '70 Road Runners have been made into Superbirds.  It's not a simple matter of removing parts and repainting.....these cars will be forever wingcar clones due to the amount of work involved.   I know because I have a wingcar clone, although mine started out as a 1970 318 SE Charger.  After upgrading it to RT standards with a 440 and Dana rear, then adding the Daytona body parts....I assure you it will never be an original Charger again.
Just thought I would throw that out as a way of putting the whole General Lee discussion in the proper prospective.....It's not like they are chopping the tops, and doing major body work.......

Besides, DuPont needs to sell more orange paint........  :icon_smile_wink:

I should probably state my position, as I really like to see a nice General Lee clone  :2thumbs:

Yeah, it's their car and they can and should do what they want with it - and in my opinion, the General Lee is/was a legendary car, real or clone  :Twocents:

Now those 1/2 a$$ed clones made from 1970 Chargers or God knows what else? Those bother me, but in a different sense - if you are going to do something, do it right, whatever the task

SRT-68

I love the whole GL look and have no problem with people cloning them. I have seen thousands of "restored" Chargers and other than the really rare cars they do nothing for me anymore. For me the modified cars are cheaper and more fun to drive. But I have always preferred the plasma cutter to the Year one catalog.

Kinda....but maybe not as much if Halloween was every day.... because let's face it, the GL is a Charger with costume on.

I think what bothers most is seeing a " Does it bother you to see a Dodge charger cloned into a General Lee" thread once a month........ :brickwall:

It doesn't bother me, it's their car.  I really don't care to see say a "converted" '68 R/T with original drivetrain or a '69 R/T SE in costume either, although it's just a matter of a new paint job to change it.  What does get on my nerves is that 60% of the people I talk into ask me "where's the 01 and flag?" or "you gonna paint it orange?" or the ever popular "are the doors welded shut?".  I simply tell them no and its going to be painted silver and they look at me like I just slapped them in the face and then they move along. Boy does that get old.

I agree.

To each his own, great, all for it...but yeah, the GL paint job has become somewhat of a 'joke'.  The GL theme has been put on lots of vehicles (Chargers and others) and I've had quite a few people ask me if I'm gonna paint mine orange and put a 01 on it, and then chuckle.

The GL is comical to many people, and I don't like being associated with that.  The classic Charger is one of the best car designs ever, and to me it's kinda sad that many people think 'orange 01' when you mention Dodge Charger.

Every GL clone reinforces the mindset.  People just don't get to see many classic Chargers on the road, and when they do, I'd rather it not be a GL.

I didn't realize the General Lee was such a "joke". Never in all the shows or trips to MATS I have done have I heard anything negative towards my GL. Most of the time I have to excuse my self or I would be there all night talking with people about it or having its picture taken. I have to use special wax to protect the paint from all the camera flashes!

The only negative I ever hear about GL's is on this forum.

HeavyFuel,

What mindset does the GL clone reinforce? Because if your judging me by my car you might be wrong.

it's funny, but years back when I mentioned building this car to a few friends on the Corvette Forum, I was torn to shreds..

Why do you want to hang out with a group of old people?

Why do you want to be associated with MOPAR people, they are the worst kind of a-hole out there!!

Why would you want one of those heavy old crates?

Why would you want to give up luxury, speed, handling and performance for one of "those"?

Look at the interior on the Chargers, they are horrid. No creature comforts.

And this whole time... I thought it was the Corvette guys being a-holes.. I couldn't have been more wrong.  The last time I saw such a large group of narrow minded opinionated a-holes was when I went to the Democratic convention in town...

Who cares if your car is Brown, Red, Tan, Green or Black .. It's the same f'n car.. Save your hating effort for the ricers.. It's getting old seeing shit like this on a CHARGER forum.

X2.     I look at my car as basically a toy and the reactions I get from people with this car is crazy.   The car is a celebrity and the public can't get enough of it.  I feel bad when I'm with a few other Charger buddies and my car gets most of the attention.    Even though their cars are nicer.
At least I'm not a snobby bitch and look down on my buddies cars because they just have plain chargers and not a GENERAL LEE.  This reminds me of going to guitar center and listening to average Joe's that aren't famous and don't get the attention bagging on a famous guitar player that gets the attention.

I think the subject is beat to the ground. It is mostly cosmetic . They do care about and take care of their cars for the Most part so they are preserving them for the future. As long as someone don't sneak into our garages and paint a 01 on our cars it should be none of our business.

I agree  :horse: , But are you saying I don't care about my car like someone who did theirs back to factory? If so you are wrong, I take care of mine so well I built the General a 3 car garage and gave him 2 friends to hang out with.

It would be cute to see a Daytona Lee complete with the bull bar at the front of the nose cone.  :hah:

I sorta groan and shrug when I see one, but ultimately it's still a great car, just not one I'd drive personally.

Some people bemoan my decision to do an AAR hood and spoiler in a 71 'Cuda. And my 18" and 20" wheels, my shaved items and my aftermarket gauges, etc.

To each their own.
