I dont know. I think the only way could stand having a general would have to be a real one. ... A clone could never be good enough...  ::)

There are more NON GL cars than there are GL. So, why not. Wasnt for the movie, the Charger would not be AS recognized today. But then again, I like numbers on doors, it gives it the NASCAR look and Orange suits the car... so maybe leave the front bar off and the flag off and you got a nice orange NASCAR style charger?  :Twocents:

Not sure if your being sarcastic or not but.......the Dukes of Hazzard TV show came out in 1979, and the movie you refer to was, well,  put it this way, I hate the car dodge is calling a charger these days, absolutely hate it, with a passion.  I'd buy one of those cars before I'd watch the 2005 movie.........

(I watched it once, by myslef, and have not allowed my wife and kids to watch it....)

IE, most references to the DOH or a "general lee" on this board, probably are refering to the tv show.....

No,it doesnt bother me.I think the general lee is a very cool car.I really would like to own one someday. ;)
But i will NOT turn my 69 R/T 4 speed into a general lee.Instead i would buy me a not so nice charger to build one,and drive the hell out if it just like the dukeboys. :yesnod:
So,if i ever buy another 69 besides the one i own,i will probably turn it into a genny lee.

Back in Feb I saw John Bo Duke himself took my sunvisor up to have him sign also tooks some pics of my General so he could see it. He was very impressed with my car he even said that he has seen tons of Generals and most of them people just slap them together and he hates even looking at them but when someone like me takes the time and does it right he loves looking at them and he said it was one of the nicest he has seen yet. He noticed some of the details I did on it that only Generals should have. He told me to contact him when it was finished. He also signed one of my 8x10 pics of my car.

I have also only seen the Dukes of Hazard "movie" once, correct me if I'm wrong (it was a while since I saw it) but I thought Cooter put a Hemi in the movie Charger after their first car was wrecked before the big race

They only ever had one GL in the movie.  The "overhauled" one was supposed to be the same car.  (At least according to the fiction.  The production crew actually bought 26 Charger VIN numbers in various conditions.)

If you believe what you see onscreen, Cooter put a 528 Hemi in it.

Hate it.  No one should ever build the car they want.......

Even if you absolutely hate it when someone makes a GL, if you were out mowing your front lawn and saw one roll by on the street you'd stop and stare at it wouldn't you? Its still a beautiful car
Great point.  And the first thing you thnik is how cool a 69 charger is.

Agreed, I've only seen twenty one or so 2nd gen Chargers in my life in the wild.  Six of those twenty one were General Lee replicas, yeah I was in awe because it's the General Lee.  Yet I was also in awe because it's a Charger.  I thought to myself GASP a CHARGER!!!

Vainglory, Esq.

As much as I like the General Lee - and I really do - I just wonder why, with all the wonderful variety of Chargers out there, people would want to build one that looks literally exactly the same as hundreds of others?  Call me crazy, but the longer I spend with this Charger hobby, the more of a purist I become.  The interesting ones are the ones you haven't seen before.  The fun part is the variety and history that you find with the original cars, not the fact that a carbon copy of your car was once on basic cable.

That said, I don't really care if someone wants to make a General Lee, as long as they're not cutting up something with real history to do it.  I would just never do it myself.

I wonder if the rat rodder people get as much abuse as the GL folks?  If you own the car, it doesn't matter what you do some one some place is going to question your direction :Twocents: I like stock, but own a clone :shruggy: I also built a Bee tribute and that is what I wanted :2thumbs:

They may look alike, but if you look closer, you will notice it's the small details that sets the cars apart  :2thumbs:

Jeff's is the prime example, the only thing cloning his to a true GL is the number on the door, flag on the roof, wheels and push bar. Everything else certainly isn't copied. Would have to be the best GL "clone" I have ever seen!

If your car was at MATS this past year, I think I've seen it.  And I like it very much.  Again, I wouldn't do the paint/pushbar/decals, but that's just me.  And in terms of small details, the wide variety of factory-available options is good enough for me.  But to each his own, right?

DAY CLONA

Usually I could not care what others do to THEIR cars, GL clones, Bullitt clones, R/T clones, Daytonas, etc, etc,......or full blown OEM restos, as long as their car is not sitting there rotting away year after year after year.....I will have to admit, the only GL that gave me a case of indigestion was "Duketona".......now that was just wrong on so many levels....the minute that Kawasaki green wing was installed :RantExplode:

I'd love to have a General Lee clone to zip around in.

Lots of country roads around here.

One of these days, I might even get around to making one of my junkers into one...

...I already have the wheels and the horn :coolgleamA:

Why not ask if it bothers you to see a Charger painted black or does it bother you to see a Charger with the radio tuned to smooth jazz?  I am far from a fan of the GL and do not personally care much about the show either but what color someone paints their Charger is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down on my list of things to get uptight about.    (unless a GL fan starts to tell me its the greatest car in the world and everyone should love them just because they do, I admit I get needlessly uptight about that)

Mike DC

GLs only look the same to the non-rabid fan.  A fan can pick out details just like a Mopar Nats O.E. resto judge.

A GL replica sometimes goes beyond a car project and crosses over into "Hollywood prop replica" territory.  It brings up many of the issues that you get if you try to build a perfect Batman costume or something like that.

What era of the franchise do you replicate?  Or do you make a hybrid?
Do you want the spirit of the fictional thing more than the reality they had onscreen?
Do you want it only as nice as the real thing, or nicer?  What about issues when the way it looked/sounded on film wasn't quite the way it looked/sounded in person?
What kind of sacrifices do you want to make for practicality compared to the real props (which were hastily-done items that never lasted very long)?
Etc.

mopar0166

I dont see an issue with it, mine was orignally a 318 se car and had no value as a restored car.  it made a perferct car for a GL

People who buy orginal r/ts etc and make the a GL replica is a bit much.

I have enjoyed the fun of building the car the way i want it and the way i believe it to be true.  I could care less what duke fans think is right or wrong.  John S. loved my car and its really only about 50% done.

What it comes down to is, its your car and you can create your own dream ride.

Hell, I'll throw my hat into this...

I don't like GenLee clones.  I wouldn't go so far to say that they bother me...I just hated the show and I think they look awful.

I also don't like (in no particular order)

1.  Rallye wheels on pre '70 cars.
2.  Go-wings on pre-'70 cars
3.  '70 go-wings on '71 cars and Visa-versa.
4.  Grant steering wheels
5.  Purple Challengers
6.  Mushrooms
7.  Scotch
8.  Maroon 5

So..all of you rush out and do exactly what I say so you can all be cool like me!

I ain't got time for pain, the only pain I got time for is the pain i put on fools how don't know what time it is.

69 OUR/TEA

I don't mind seeing GL clones,as long as they are done correct.Of course I watched the show every Fri night as a little kid,and appreciate it more now than ever, the fact that real cars with real stuntmen were actually doing the jumps,no computer generated effects, unmanned cars being launched off runways with compressed pressure, etc !!!
Now,for me,I was introduced to the 69 Charger by way of seeing DMCL,so if I ever get another for some strange reason,it won't be a GL,but a DMCL car,and as another said,"I already have the wheels"!!!!!!  :D
