Is this a B-17?

I snapped this picture in Richmond, VA on Friday of last week.  There were two old warbirds there making a guest appearance... this one which I'm pretty sure is a B-17, and another twin engine bomber-type that I'm thinking was a B-24 (Liberator? It had twin vertical stabilizers at the tips of the horizontal stabilizers).

The smaller bomber did multiple take-offs and landings, and it was pretty cool feeling the building shake.  That one was nothing compared to when the plane in this picture took off.  You could feel it in your chest, and I'm certain we were at least a half mile away - probably more.

Awesome machines...

Yes, a B-17. Probably a B-17E, F or G.  Was there a Forward firing turret under the nose?

other plane sounds like a B25 Mitchell, B24 Liberator was a 4 engine bomber

Yeah, the other one was almost certainly a B25... looked like that picture, definitely a twin engine.  It was flying around much more than it was on the ground and I didn't have my camera handy the times I saw it flying around so no pictures of it.

I could not see the front of the B17, so I couldn't tell you if it had an under-nose turret.  By the time I got outside when it took off it was already hidden by the treeline.

I think those two travel together.  Don't they call themselves the Confederate Air Force?

It's called the "Commemorative Air Force" now.  Too many bad feelings associated with the word "Confederate".

So it was the Confederate AF?

They made a low level pass over my boat in the middle of Lake Erie while I was on the way to the Islands.   After we washed out our pants, one of my passengers called them the Confederate Air Force.  Was that due to alcohol consumption or did they actually go by Confederate AF at one time?  (This may have been 10-12 years ago.)

They buzzed the islands several times that weekend.  I'll never forget it!

I have a picture of that plane as my desktop background. Actually, I have about 10 that I rotate. The smaller ones was almost definitely a B-25. A B-24 is larger - and at least as loud - as the B-17. I have lots of B-25 pictures from the Doolittle Reunion last year.

The Commemorative Air Force and the Collings Foundation are two separate associations, flying these old panes, throughout the country, on their annual tours.

Didn't mean to confuse anybody.   :slap:  The 2 planes Geno saw fly with the Collins Foundation.  I was just trying to let everybody know that what used to be the Confederate Air Force is now named the Commemorative Air Force.   :yesnod:

These two organizations really need to combine. "The Commemorative Air Force and the Collings Foundation are two separate associations". It seems the Collins Foundation has a chip on it's shoulder.  I would rather go to a CAF fly in.  :Twocents:
