im about to put the motor into the car so im going to put the distributor in. so i go to put the drive gear in and its not sliding into the bronze bushing. do i have to tap it in with a hammer or should it just slide right it?

Charger-Bodie

Sometimes the bulge a little from tapping is in. A lot of engine builders will ream it to fit while its apart. Im not sure how to handle this on an assembled engine.

How tight is it?
68 Charger R/t white with black v/t and red tailstripe. 440 4 speed ,black interior
68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .
My Charger is a hybrid car, it burns gas and rubber............

i cant get it to slide in really. this really sucks as my dad is comming down in a few mins to help me drop the motor in the car.

terrible one

This thread will give you some insight: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,77413.0.html

Unfortunately it probably doesn't contain good news for you. At the very least yes it needs to be reamed, but according to John in the thread I linked to above, they need to be installed using the special tool he shows to get a tight fit in the block while still cutting the I.D. of the bushing.

Aftermarket bushings like the Pioneer PC-780 don't need sizing.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

so is my only option to get that 150$ tool to get the old one out and install a new one?  do i have to remove the intake or can i do everything through the distributor hole? the engines completly assembled and sitting in the car. i really hope this isnt a huge issue  :flame:

If you have the correct tools you can remove/install the bushing with the manifold installed.

Mike, it's unfortunate that the oil pump drive shaft wasn't test fitted before installing the block in the car. The tool will fix your problem so there's not much you can do other than remove/replace the bronze bushing. I've never done one with the engine in the car but with the illustration John posted above it certainly looks feasable.  :yesnod:
