Sad news for those of you that are “Dukes of Hazard” fans;
Mopar Collectors Guide (Dec. 2011) has a story about the passing of Chip Mayer who played Vance Duke when both John Schneider and Tom Wopat walked off the show over a contract dispute.  Chip along with Byron Cherry replaced John and Tom, although many never really accepted them as John and Tom had become so popular in the series.  Chip died unexpectedly on July 24th at the age of 57 (1954-2011) in Sherman Oaks California.  From all reports he was a super individual and a great loss to all that knew him.

One season, however many episodes that is.  I think it was either season 4 or 5, I think 4....

Schneider and Wopat left because of some dispute (money related no doubt) so the storyline had them go try their hand at nascar while the 'new' cousins took their place keeping the farm safe from Boss.  Same thing happened with Roscoe as he supposedly went to the academy while another sherrif took his place.  Weren't Bo and Luke obligated to stay in Hazzard though?  Wasn't that how the story started?  They were on parole, hence they carried bow and arrow instead of firearms?

Continuity wasn't the show's strong suit but I didn't care, I never get tired of seeing the General go sideways through a turn.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Yep Chris was a really nice guy that was so much more than just "Vance Duke"...RIP Buddy.

Season 5, not the whole season either, John an Tom came back 4 episodes from the end of Season 5 in the episode "Welcome Back Bo & Luke" Where it had for afew minutes all 4 guys in afew scenes together. This was the episode where Coy & Vance Duke left the show.  RIP Chip

Wow, this is cool. Can you get your hands on something like the stock reports or gold pricing index from December 2011? I'd really like to see them.

I am sure he was a great guy. But the truth is the truth. Thankfully Knight Rider was on TV then. I gave the new guys two or three chances and I couldn't take the awful acting. Dukes will never be known for quality acting, but those two replacements were several levels even below Dukes standards.

I really like the Dukes of hazard,

but even after all these years I still haven't been able to force

myself to sit through an entire Coy and Vance episode...

Doubt I ever will...

Ditto... It was a train wreck with them on the show... They wrecked more lines than cars...  :brickwall:

Back N Black

The sad part is they tried to make a Bo and Luke look a like. :rotz:

Wopat & Schneider went on strike because their contract said they were owed XXX dollars for merchandise (in the millions), and the studio literally just hadn't given it to them.  They also complained about the bad storylines in the episodes.

The replacement Duke Boys were reading the scripts exactly as they were written.  Wopat & Schneider (and the rest of the cast) had gotten in the habit of improvising a lot of the time and it sounded much better.

Almost every member of the cast of that show went on strike at one point or anther.  Some of the strikes were resolved quickly and they never got replaced onscreen.  The Wopat/Schneider strike went on so long because the two sides weren't even talking to each other for most of that time.  The whole thing was later called an "accounting oversight".
