My 15 yr. old son asked me this evening what the R/T stood for and not knowing, I challenged him to come up with his best guess and come tell me.  Please help a proud father out so that I will not be outsmarted by my son........

R/T stands for Rapid Transit when it comes to Plymouths
"An aggressive exterior with power to match was enough to pull in the performance boys-especially when abetted by a pair of pipes blaring out the back, and brawny red-sidewall rubber hitting the pavement."

"........the four speed box changes cogs with the precision of a sharp axe striking soft pine."

C'mon guys, don't be hard on this man.  :nono:
We are learning things through our life, so he was not familiar with R/T and he asked. Don't you think it takes some courage for such question?

I know that all together we are great team and we need to keep that.  :2thumbs:

We used to joke when you could still find these cars in back yards full of trash, R/T stood for Rat Turds. You'd be cleaning them out if you got the car.

Was that ever advertised that way? I thought R/T was a Dodge only thing. I do wonder why Plymouth did not have a designation for their top "muscle" cars.

I know it stands for Road and Track and that is what confused me about his post. I was questioning if Plymouth ever actually incorporated the abbreviation "R/T" in place of Rapid Transit in their advertisements because I have never seen it. Never seen a Dodge S/P ad either.  ;)

No no no, you've all got it wrong. It means Radical Transportation. Example..."Would care for the 440, the 440 Six-pack, or the 426 Hemi. Those are your engine choices for the Charger Road & Track package. :D
"Let me explain something to you, um i am not Mr. Lebowski, you're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the dude, so that's what you call me. That or his dudeness, or duder, or you know, el duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing."

They did.  They were called GTX for the B bodies, 'Cuda for the E bodies, and Formula S for the pre-70 A bodies.

I was referring more to how Dodge handled it by using existing names. For example, Coronet to Coronet R/T, Charger to Charger R/T, and Challenger to Challenger R/T.

Plymouth just handled it in their own way by actually renaming performance models like the Roadrunner, GTX, and 'Cuda instead of following Dodge. Back in the early years they were similar with the Belvedere GTX but, by '68 it was badged as a GTX.

GTO is Gran Turismo Omligota, or however the hell you spell that.
GTX is just GTX, from what I understand.
SE is both Standard Edition, and Special Edition.
GTP is also just GTP.

I asked a Pontiac friend, he said that GTP doesn't really stand for anything.
