I got a letter in the mail today from the TDC saying that there is going to be a big meet in Missouri in 2006.  It says this will be the only TDC meet in 2006.  The letter was mostly trying to get me to re-up my membership (which I never actually bought in the first place) but there was a paragraph that stuck out at me.  It said something to the effect that only 2006 registered members would be allowed to show their cars and that the general public would not be allowed to visit.  This was after several paragraphs of how much charger owners mean to each other and camaraderie among owners and how Wayne considers all charger owners family (blah blah blah).

I guess my concern is that barring the general public from attending this event will shine badly on us as charger owners and mopar enthusiasts.  What kind of show doesn't allow people to come and look?  I can understand barring non-members from showing but I think this "private show" is a bad idea.  Does someone know the facts about this deal or did I read the letter wrong?
When I was just a very young lad I looked up and told my dad, a bareback rider's what I wanna be.  I want the whole world to know about me.  In the rodeo arena I'll make my stand.  I wanna be a rodeo man.  I'll come flyin' from the chute with my spurs up high, chaps and boots reachin' for the sky.  Spurin' wild with my head throwed back, you'll ask 'Who's that,' well that's Bareback Jack.  You'll ask 'Who's that,' well that's Bareback Jack.

i heard of something to that effect, but I do not know for a fact that is the truth.  todd wilson may know.

anywho, if this is the truth, then I believe it is a sad day for mopar owners.  kinda elitist in my eyes, but I am sure they will come up with some "great" substantiative reasons as why they are doing what they are doing.  I just wont buy them.

I got a letter from Wayne also. It said I had to re-up my membership( $35.00) before the end of December or I couldn't go to the show. the problem is that show is the week end before the July 4th week end and Carlisle is the week end after the 4th. way to much traveling in a short amount of time for me.

I have had my letter for a week or two now. The Meet this year will be for members and their families only. It is a called member appreciation meet celebrating the 20th year of the Charger Registry from my understanding. I don't really know if it will work out or not. From past experience their were not a lot of general public attendees at the 2 meets I have been too. There were many Charger's that were not members though so that may be a negative. However, it never has been a "show" and trophies are not given out. For me it is more of an informal gathering of people with a common interest.

Wayne is not an elitist by any means and I doubt that was his intention at all. He is probably one of the most honest and sincere guys I have met in the hobby. He has a true passion for Charger's and at last year's meet he said this year was basically going to be dedicated to the members that have helped the Registry with their membership fee.

Regardless of how it turns out, I just booked my motel for the meet and will be there with my wife for at least Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

You are correct. Only one show and its members only and public will not be invited. The original letter sent out said the deadline was Jan 1st 2006 for joining TDC and that was the cut off date for the show.

No public  and an invite only   doesnt seem right to me! Thats not a real show in my book. In the past you try and meet new Charger owners and get them involved. The public has loved every Charger Meet I have been too.

Thats what Charger Meets are all about! Getting eveyone together! The Chargers and owners with the public and new owners that may be out there now struggling because they do not know anyone else out there! Not putting everyone in a locked secret building where we stand there and look at each other. I want to talk and meet new people and see new projects. I want to cruise and talk with people that stop you at the gas station or the restaurant. Chargers always bring attention and not having a public meet just isnt right!

You should plan to attend El Dorado Charger Fever Meet in September! Its FREE and OPEN to the public!!!!!!!!   The official date is  September 16 & 17, 2006 at El Dorado Kansas!!!!!!!!  The entire town gets involved in the downtown district and the museum where we have the meet. The news paper and Chamber of Commerce really help out.

We will be putting out a 2006 Charger Fever T shirts soon with the 40th annv. of the 1st gen Charger as a theme for this years 2 shows.

Maybe that's why TDC calls them "Meets"?

I've only been to one, and it was held in a semi-remote but public place, and not advertised to the general public. A few wanderers did stop by, but it was kind of refreshing to just talk with Charger folks, hang out, and not have to deal with the typical open car show frenzy....ie. dogs on leashes peeing on the tires, people tugging on your spark plug wires, food and drink dribbled on the car, your wiper knob disappearing !, etc. I think there is room for both meets and shows.

Exactly.  I have been to one of Wayne's meets and I agree that he is a great guy and true Charger freak.  Same on the informal air about his shows.  They are a nice laid back get together.

Wayne's only doing one meet this year.  He's celebrating the 20th year of TDC and the 40th anniversary of the Charger introduction.  You have to admire his enthusiasm.  So far it's the only meet/show I've committed to.  I'm not sure how restrictive his rules are but I always enjoy the chance to get together with friends from all over the country.  I'm looking forward to it.  I plan on attending several other shows if I can.  There's room for more shows all over the country.

ITSA426

I just saw Wayne has updated info on the Jefferson City meet on the TDC website.  It's worth a look.

Sendero

Just a note on Wayne, Got to correspond with him in the mid 80's when I first got my car. He was extremely helpful and I doubt that trait has changed. He is likely just trying to get the charger types together without the show formalities.

Not worth $35 a year to go to a one time private show atleast imo

Dodge-Charger

If Charger owners start doing " owner only " shows, we will soon have the same name as most Vette owners.  ( Guns and Rotors is Excluded from that catagory ) He'll keep telling ya to have a seat and check it out !

I have a few Chargers in my yard and non of them are show quality ( yet ) but that does not stop people from stopping and looking at my cars, so you know if a lot full of high quality Show Stoppers are sittin around it's gonna get some attention. I aint gonna be the one to tell a dad that him and his kid caint come look around .

This is the only year that it is a members only meet. In every other year there are several meets all over the country that all people are welcome to attend free of charge.

I don't know how they are going to address gate crashers during the event though.

I used to be a member of TDC, but let my membership expire several years back.  It seemed like an expensive club T-shirt to buy (since I didn't get much out of the newsletters, when they came)...  My house is only 1-1/2 hours east of JeffCity, and I'd love to road-trip up there, but not if it's a closed "meet."

Wayne is a great guy and an asset to the hobby, I agree.  Perhaps the situation has changed for the better, and for everyone's sake I hope it has.

I might drop Wayne a note to see if the "deadline" has really passed or not.

ITSA426

Looks like he extended the deadline into May but I understand the hotels are filling.  The hotel parking lot sessions are one of the great parts of the meets.

694spdRT

The host motel is full. I booked my room at the second one on the list and there were still rooms available as of Monday.

I am looking forward to talking to people at the motel as well. Is he planning a cruise this year like at most of the events?

Will the individual TDC meets be back next year?  The TDC Boerne, TX meet was the event that I looked forward to all year!  :yesnod:

That was my understanding at the Madison meet last year. One big meet this year and then back to the way it always was. He did mention that every 3 years or so he picks new locations though.

Last time I talked to Wayne he said that this is one year only and next year will be back to multiple meets in various locations.  Boerne is also my favorite but Wayne might move it again.  A couple years ago he went to Ardmore OK to change the scenery but I don't think it went over very well with the group.

:iagree: The meet in VA. in 98 was the first Charger meet that I went to and I thought it was great because it was low keyd.
