I just searched the site looking for pictures of the factory splice (between the bulkhead and the ammeter) on a '68 Charger coming from the alternator and splicing out to the ignition, lights/fuse box and the ammeter.  I couldn't find anything...

I'd like to know where to look for it once I have the instrument panel off.  Appreciate any pictures that anyone can post up...    :yesnod:

its on the black wire going to  the amp-meter , its a 5 wires splice    ( power to fuse box / ignition switch / head light switch /  amp meter !  fire wall connector !!    the splice has  fabric type insulating tape  round it  ,  no solder its like the copper strands are compression fused or something ! well thats how my original was !! ( the new M & H harness are propper soldered )
its in the harness about where the radio  connection is / the ignition switch wires join the main harness   wrapped  in the main harness ! ,
cant take a picture of my original as i had to repair it 22 years back & re solder wires & stuff

*** EDIT ****  just found this picture on ther net !!  start looking where i have ringed in green  :yesnod:

That helps... thanks tan top.  So do you think its worth eliminating this splice in favour of connectors on a bus bar post??   :shruggy:

I'm running some wiring mods that have me in there already and I can upgrade the wiring from the splice to the ignition, fuse box, lights and ammeter to 8 GA if I do.  Never heard of a splice failing or any wiring from there to the fuse box, lights or ignition, so don't know whether I should be applying the "don't fix it if it ain't broke" rule or not...   :scratchchin:

  well when i had to repair my original harness !! i just soldered the lot together !
after i done the resto on mine  , put the car back together with all new harnesses from M&H  ran it for a few years !! then finally got round to doing  my own take on the Mad  ampmeter by pass &  convert the factory  amp to a volt meter !  , but went totally nutts with over kill protected every thing with blade fuses !!   went into the new M&H dash harness &  done away with the soldered splice (   & separated the three power wires & protected them  each with standard  blade fuses & seperate fuse box also  , re designed the power supply wiring  , done away with fusible links & used maxi blade fuses  , no need for this really , but once i started i thought i'll just do this & change that !!  ::) dont look stock any more under the hood but ...
IF your not   wanting to draw  any more amps than what the stock charging system was designed for & its in good condition & the amp meter studs are tight !!  maybe leave as it !! all what i done is / was  personal choice i'm nutts like that .

Nacho , knows more about electrical stuff  than i ever will &  has got a good version to improve the amp carring ability  by running  two extra wires , thick gauge wires along side the factory stuff , so when loads are high !! all the amps no longer pass through the factory spliced connection !

Yeah,  I've read lots of Nachos wiring threads and they're excellent!     :yesnod:

I'm actually doing a slightly modified version of his ammeter shunt modification to take a good chunk of the load off of the ammeter.  I've added a few fuses to his suggestion and am by-passing the bulkhead connector much like the factory did on taxis and police interceptors.  All this while trying to be as inconspicuous as possible to keep the original look.

So did you ever have any issues with your soldered splice at all over the years?

Budnicks

Mymopar.com  for schematics,  MadElectronics.com  for components & tech talk on amp meter issues & fixes,  Mopar Action Magazine Tech section , all have some sorts of repair, wire diagram or how to improve...

no  !!   the soldered splice in the M&H harness is as good as it gets !! but the factory OEM   compression fused thingy  splice  :-\ looks a bit iffy !! :Twocents:  , there are better ways to do that now IMO ,  either by soldering   or busbar or similar , but to do that where the original splice is ! is a no no , lack of space length of wires etc etc so once you get into doing something like that , your going to be replacing the wires that run to the splice with longer ones  to do the job properly ! i only went into the new M&H harness because i was changing the charging set up with amp gauge ! if i werent altering the factory set up i would of left the soldered splice alone  ,
