Are the gas tanks black only on cars that have been treated with undercoating???

Rolling_Thunder

mine was covered in undercoating -  I suspect mine was dealer added-  not sure if the factory coated the tank.

same here on both my 68 and 69.
However I have seen others with natural tanks. Not sure if that is build plant differences or due to dealer installed undercoating.

No - When ordered from the factory, Chrysler did it.

When the dealer tried to make extra money like undercoating, Ziebart, Scotchguard, vinyl top or side moldings etc. the dealer did it.

A lot of (all of mine and many other originals) factory non-undercoated cars had the sides and front of the tanks hit. They were hit when the rear wheelwell sound deadening got sprayed on. I have a couple of non-undercoat 70's that they wailed the stuff on - even loaded up the complete bottom of the tank.

Here are a couple of pics of a 16,000 mile 69 before I cleaned up all the dirt. This is a non-undercoat car but you can see were the stuff landed.

Here is the same car - after some cleaning.....sorry, the gas tank is out in this pic but you can see/tell all the stuff sprayed at it. Even a little on the gas tank straps.
