Rearend question about my Charger

So I've decided to get the Charger going for next summer. My car still has the original 8 1/4 rearend which I don't think has ever really been f'ed with. I got a pretty stock (with the exception of a cam )'68 383 and 727 auto in it. I really just want to cruise the car around. Will the 8 1/4 be fine for the summer?

The limiting factor/phrase in your post is "Just wanna Cruise the car around"....the 8 1/4 would be fine cept nobody here "Just cruises the car around" for very long...

Before you know it, you've begun the peg leg burnout and are burning up your spider gears instead of creating massive clouds of smoke, then on here wondering ?WTF happened to your rearend....IF you just cruise it, yes, it will be fine. A 383/Auto won't do alot of damage in "Cruise" form.

Cody. I have an 8 1/4, 2.92 gears, peg leg in my 71 which has a 383/4 bbl/headers. I've put 11k miles on the car since I've owned it (10/95). I'm over the show off phase of my life so it's held up so far.
Although I will lay a long patch in the driveway just to piss off the wife.

Thanks for the replies guys. I really have no interest in doing burnouts with the 8 1/4. I just want to drive my Charger....simple as that.

It'll do it easy Cody and have pretty good mileage on the highway too, assuming it's got a decent ratio.

You haven't lived until you've destroyed an axle. So beat on it and have some fun. It's not like anyone will buy the axle off you to put in their car.

What about 8 3/4? how would that do with a 440?

8 3/4" rear ends came as standard equipment on 440 and even hemi cars with automatic trannys.  4 speed cars, 440's and Hemi's got the 9 1/4" Dana 60 rear end.

8 3/4 rears will live with a mild 440 and auto. a 4-speed however usually tends to put 'em a bucket with lots of little pieces that were a big single piece.

Slight correction here. the Dana 60 was 9 3/4" rear. The 9 1/4" rear was what's under most trucks nowadays...
No a Dana 60 isn't "Required" but if you put your 8 3/4 on the ground, then you WILL have to eventually upgrade to a Dana.

Depends..I built Both my Dana 60s out of  old 3/4 ton "Truck" rears for under $500.00(Trac Loc).......DONE.....

You want it all brand new and delivered? Runs about $2000.00 From most companies.
