Here is a few things for you bullit fans. With a stripe delete 68-9 charger. Did they ALL come with metal R/T emblems on the 1/4 panels? The 68 bullit movie charger did not have either the emblems or the stripe but did have the R/T front and back. Was the stripe taken off this car for the movie ? Anyone recall an article ( and pic ) in Hot Rod or Popular Hot Rodding ( or along that line ) years ago of a 383 car that was supposedly a back up car for the movie ? Is there such a car and is it still around ?

very interesting question(about the stripe). i've wondered that very thing. i've never seen a stripe delete 68 charger R/T, but seen plenty of 69 R/T stripe delete cars(i own 2).. anyone know about the 68 thing?

my 68 was originally a strip delete car. The 68s didnt have the rt badges on the quarter panels, only front and rear.

Silver R/T

Ive seen a few stripe delete   R/Ts none of them had emblems on quarters (unless added by owner)

My '68 RT is a stripe delete car. No cast RT emblems in '68 from what I have seen.  Not all that rare to have the stripe delete from what I have been told. It would be neat to find out how many were built with that option.

:iagree:  No badges were offered in 1968. Totally off topic but, you could only get the Dana rear with 3.54 gears in 1968 so the Bullit car could not have had 4.10 gears.

Unless it was modified. ;)  I tend to think it was fairly stock though.  I used to have an issue of Motor Trend with a Steve McQueen interview in it from shortly after that movie's release and McQueen said a lot of things in the interview that sort of fly in the face of what everyone else claims about those cars.  I remember the biggest one being that Steve insisted the Charger was a Hemi car.  I think he was a little embarrassed for the Mustang.  He was a Ford fan after all.

:iagree:  we all agree no badges on the side anywhere on a 68. I would say most 68 RT Chargers are stripe delete.
I have had 10, 68 RT Chargers myself, and only one was not stripe delete, stripe delete is very common.

It has been said in this forum that in 69 any R/T ordered stripe delete got the Quarter panel emblems. No QP Emblems in 68.

I recall reading article that was about the movie Bullitt, and they were talking to Steve McQueen, and he was saying how the Charger was just walking away from him and that they had to tell the driver of the Charger to slow down.

THE CHARGER PUNK

i know of that triple black 383 -4spd car that was used for a back up car but was never used. Jerry Junamen(<--is that correct spelling?) the same guy who owns the plum crazy 70 daytona r/t se also owns the back up bullitt car,my buddy(marco deleriva<--charger guy)knows jerry and told me this a little while back, i would like to get my hands on that issue of hot rod and see that article-MATT

Regardless the Charger in Bullitt was origially blue, painted black ( you can see the blue paint when the drivers door handle get knocked off from side swiping the truck) anyway it might of had a stripe before hand ? Im sure everyone knows it was a non console too.

THE CHARGER PUNK

i know for a fact off various sites that in the chase they had a triple black 440-4-spd 68 r/t stripe delete car and then there was the blue r/t (which was painted black )which was identical as well but was an automatic and if u watch on the dvd in special features it shows bill hickman ripping around on a track in the charger while it was blue and it shows no bumblebee stripe-MATT

THE CHARGER PUNK

and charger 69 you are right about there being no-console as you can see in only one scene, where paul genge(the shotgun hitman) is loading his winchester and u can see the shifter boot on the floor and no console or also there is no buddy seat either(<---how rare is that?)-MATT

Well now I have to watch it again because I thought there was a scene where Hickman slides a console shifter into "D"! :o

Now that is interesting. My 68 is a stripe delete also, but I thought it was the exception to the rule.  Man, I you'd think everyone would have gone for the stripe, but apparently it was a little to far out there at the time.  Little did the folks back then know what would be coming up in the next couple years, with the billboards and all.  Can you say "a sticker as big as a throw rug"?

Dammit Ghoste, if a 15yr old kid says it's a fact, then gosh darnit, it's gotta be true. You should know better than to challenge a boy with superior grammar skills. 10 lashes for you.  :P

Ghoste

Honestly though Chris, I'm not sure and I figure that's as good an excuse as any to watch the movie again.  It's at least a year since I last watched it.

Not for nothing, I also went to locate my Bullit dvd, and of course it's nowhere to be found.  :icon_smile_sad: I either have a Ghost who made it dissapear (no offense), or some hee-haw ganked me for it?

THE CHARGER PUNK

actually im 17 and have watched bullitt well over 20 times, you can see the round boot on the ground when hes loading the shotgun-MATT

You are right. It appears as a non console 4 speed car or perhaps, the console was removed for some filming reason as the shift boot and bezel are there with both setups.

In the extra footage of the charger going around the race track up in san fran the car is black, not blue for sure! :icon_smile_big: also for anyone who has never seen the extra footage ,remember the scene where the charger sorta over shoots the right turn and crashes into a white 56? ford and the screen goes blank for a second, it shows it hitting the the camara and blowing it right off its pedistal ( i guess they were able to retieve the film) last but not least its cool they show McQueen briefly beating the piss out that stang .
