It is not just the driving.  Parking, lack of respect from other kids at this dance.  I go to every HS home football games and I am amazed at kids.  I saw a bunch of kid sitting, laying and climbing on a prett nice Accura (I know not a classic charger).  I said I bet your parents don't know you are treating there car like a jumbo Gym, as I passed by.  One of them said, " oh it aint are car it 's Pat supinski's" :brickwall:  I would worry more about the other kids than the kid asking to borrow it!!!

Ask him if you could "borrow" his date when he's thru with the prom.  :D

The kid has serious balls. No frikkin' way.

Yes he does, but in all fairness..he's what...17-18? He probably just thinks its a "cool old car" - which it unequivocally is - but doesn't quite realize how rare and coveted it is.

I would think one's balls must be enlarged to ask to borrow ANY type of "cool old car", no matter how coveted it is.
He wants to use the car for the prom? Tell him you'll gladly do it, as long as you chauffeur. There's no way I would even think to ask to borrow anyone's prized classic.

I let my brother drive my '70 ONCE. In my wedding. He had to bring it around the corner to the front of the church so my wife & I could get in. He DREADED every moment of it, he was scared sh*tless!  :smilielol:
I took over the driving duties from there.

He is a real good kid, and i let him drive the car around the block one time when i rode with him and he was just completely floored on how much different it was from his Honda.  He loved it in everyway, but no, i dont think he knows how rare it is, at least to me anyways.  I'll tell him no-go, for obvious reasons, and i was already planning to drive it Saturday afternoon/evening anyways. :coolgleamA:

OK I got a compromise he either wants to be seen by all his friends in a badass car and or most likely wants to get laid. here's what you can do, you can drive it to the prom with them in it and pull over a block before the school, then you let them hop up front and you go in the back, let him drive it up the street so all there friends can see them in it, let him pull up and wait till they walk in and drive off. :shruggy: It all depends on how well you guys get along. Its a good compromise and you will always know what is happening with your car.

I say, give him a bottle of jack, bag of weed and let him drive you charger to the prom. Oh don't forget to fill her up!
On a serious note, i had a good friend of mine ask me if his son could drive my charger to the prom. I explained that he is not covered on the insurance policy and it was too big of a risk to take. He got pissed and said its only a couple of miles, i asked if his son had 45 grand in the bank to cover the cost if something should happen??? but i did drive him and his date to the prom.

Kid: Hey, I'm going to Homecoming this Saturday, Do you think I could loan your car for that night?
Me: Only if you can make it do a burnout for 1 block.

Kid: Um whats a burnout?
Me: FAIL!  You can borrow my spouses mini-van now.

then again, he didnt even have the decency of asking you in person. F--- him.

That's kinda where I was going too.  If they don't have the goods to ask in person it's not that important to them.

I say make the kids day. Get the insurance lined up and let him drive it.

Here's a little story that i told here once before that dovetails nicely with the thread topic.

My dad has a 1973 Roadrunner that he bought in 75 and its pretty much mint.  In the 1980s had a burnt valve so it was parked in a garage for some 10 years.  When i was 17 i wanted to get it out, rebuild the engine and use the car for my HS Junior Prom.  I begged and begged my Dad for a year to get it out and get it running again.  Finally he agreed and we got the car out of storage and we pulled the 400 and sent it to the engine builder for rebuilding.  My dad is a mechanic and his friend is the engine builder.

Prom comes and goes and no engine yet back from the engine builder.  I was upset but i had another year of HS, I'll just use it for Homecoming in the fall.  That dance comes and goes and i thought, well, I'll get the car by Prom my Senior year.  That dance comes and goes and i just couldn't understand why the engine took so long to have a valve fixed in the head.

After i graduated HS and went off to college guess what happened?  The engine was surprisingly done and ready to go back in the roadrunner.  Coincidence? :slap:

LOL!!

If you get along really well with the kid im sure he'd make sure to get it back to you in one piece but like someone else said, kids are stupid. He might try to show off, burnout and stuff it into a tree.  :eek2: But none of this matters if your insurance doesn't cover drivers under 25. Simple answer right?

BigBlackDodge

Disable the car and tell him you are having wiring issues right now.

Keep the car in the garage dance night and pound a nail into your eye.  Same outcome.   :Twocents:

You're not seriously considering this, are you? :image_294343: Aside from the driving, which is scary enough, the car's going to sit in some podunk parking lot for three hours unattended.

 ..............No, sorry.

Along the same lines, I am guessing I will have to say no in the near future to the same question. I have two daughter's in high school and I bet I get asked the same question in a couple years.

Ummm no.  As much as i remember being that kid trying to get my Dads roadrunner in my previous thread, the neighbor kid can "buy his own musclecar" just like i had to.

Although with the price of gas, i could require him to bring it back with a full tank, it just might be worth it then...  :icon_smile_big:

Sometimes you just gotta go with your heart,  I'd do it. You gotta have a little faith in the Kid. I would hope that he holds you and your Charger with a greaty deal of respect.
