So the neighbor kid who is a senior this year sends me a text last night and says:

Kid: Hey, I'm going to Homecoming this Saturday, Do you think I could loan your car for that night?
Me: Only if you can make it do a burnout for 1 block.

Kid: Um whats a burnout?
Me: FAIL!  You can borrow my spouses mini-van now.

Me: you can borrow it if my spouse and I can ride in the back.
Kid: Ugh, I don't think that would work.

Me: when you say "loan", how much are we talking?
Kid: I must have said it wrong, borrow for the evening?

Me: My spouse still has her prom dress and I can rent a tux from 1993....
Kid: I already have my suit and she has her dress.

Me: no I'm talking about what we can wear when we ride along..
Kid: Dude, you unfortunately cant ride in the back.

Kid: So could I borrow it for Saturday please?? Without you riding in the back?

I haven't responded back yet, I need to come up with another confusing question for him.   He is a real good kid and I hire him to help me to projects once in a while but he is not a car guy so what do you guys think I should repond with?

You: Ok, YOU can ride in the back.

The kid's definitely got balls to ask and good taste in cars. Or he's just really trying to get laid.

That would NOT be a lie.    Underage drivers (ie: 25) are not permitted under most classic policies to the best of my knowledge.

The real driving factor in my decision is that I have not "broken in" the Charger yet and I'm certainly not going to let the neighbor kid  beat me to the punch.  Haha   :icon_smile_big:

This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Here's a little story that i told here once before that dovetails nicely with the thread topic.

My dad has a 1973 Roadrunner that he bought in 75 and its pretty much mint.  In the 1980s had a burnt valve so it was parked in a garage for some 10 years.  When i was 17 i wanted to get it out, rebuild the engine and use the car for my HS Junior Prom.  I begged and begged my Dad for a year to get it out and get it running again.  Finally he agreed and we got the car out of storage and we pulled the 400 and sent it to the engine builder for rebuilding.  My dad is a mechanic and his friend is the engine builder.

Prom comes and goes and no engine yet back from the engine builder.  I was upset but i had another year of HS, I'll just use it for Homecoming in the fall.  That dance comes and goes and i thought, well, I'll get the car by Prom my Senior year.  That dance comes and goes and i just couldn't understand why the engine took so long to have a valve fixed in the head.

After i graduated HS and went off to college guess what happened?  The engine was surprisingly done and ready to go back in the roadrunner.  Coincidence? :slap:

Just tell him you checked your insurance and no one under 25 can drive it. Or I your thinking about letting him that's your deal but I know Grundy wouldn't cover it.

Yes he does, but in all fairness..he's what...17-18? He probably just thinks its a "cool old car" - which it unequivocally is - but doesn't quite realize how rare and coveted it is.

I would think one's balls must be enlarged to ask to borrow ANY type of "cool old car", no matter how coveted it is.
He wants to use the car for the prom? Tell him you'll gladly do it, as long as you chauffeur. There's no way I would even think to ask to borrow anyone's prized classic.

He is a real good kid, and i let him drive the car around the block one time when i rode with him and he was just completely floored on how much different it was from his Honda.  He loved it in everyway, but no, i dont think he knows how rare it is, at least to me anyways.  I'll tell him no-go, for obvious reasons, and i was already planning to drive it Saturday afternoon/evening anyways. :coolgleamA:

OK I got a compromise he either wants to be seen by all his friends in a badass car and or most likely wants to get laid. here's what you can do, you can drive it to the prom with them in it and pull over a block before the school, then you let them hop up front and you go in the back, let him drive it up the street so all there friends can see them in it, let him pull up and wait till they walk in and drive off. :shruggy: It all depends on how well you guys get along. Its a good compromise and you will always know what is happening with your car.

On a serious note, i had a good friend of mine ask me if his son could drive my charger to the prom. I explained that he is not covered on the insurance policy and it was too big of a risk to take. He got pissed and said its only a couple of miles, i asked if his son had 45 grand in the bank to cover the cost if something should happen??? but i did drive him and his date to the prom.

Ummm no.  As much as i remember being that kid trying to get my Dads roadrunner in my previous thread, the neighbor kid can "buy his own musclecar" just like i had to.

Although with the price of gas, i could require him to bring it back with a full tank, it just might be worth it then...  :icon_smile_big:

I think it is a different issue if your talking about your own kids.  As long as my insurance covered it, i would have let either of my kids  use the car for an important occassion.  Luckily they never were into the cars.  infact my daughter now owns a completly original 74 Dart and is put off by all the people who want to stop and look at it :shruggy:

I'd say if the punk had the balls to come and ask you face to face he'd stand a slight chance (to gain respect).  Texting and asking NO F'N WAY!

Gong to Anoka Sat night??

its just a car..... I would not let him drive the car all the way there but as i said before compromise, You only get ONE prom night. If you do let him use the car show him how much it means to you and if it comes back with that mystery dent you can tell him you know where he sleeps and if he wants to see his family again lol jkin jkin. I think you should let him but show him if anything goes down you will have yourself a slave to do you bidding! :smilielol:

Technically yes, probably no.  I'm going to a friends house in Andover for Saturday afternoon bar-b-que so i'll be driving thru Anoka on my way home at about 8:00pm.  But the spouse and kids will be tired and crabby so i wont be stopping.  Unless you want to give me a ride home.  hey! thats a good idea!

Sounds like a plan, as long as your wife babysits our kids!  Wife and I wanted to run up there but babysitter plans fell through.

My youngest son, who had many hours working on the Charger wanted it for the Prom and Graduation and the last day of school.  It survived.

I'd buy a model car the same as yours and put it on his doorstep with a note attached that says;

Here it is, you can borrow it as long as you have it home safe by 11PM.

Better yet text him and tell him he can borrow it.... When he comes over hand him the model

The look on his face would be priceless...

My friends son asked if he could take my 1969 Chrysler 300 convertible to prom ( only 1200 of these made) I called hagerty that is my insurance and they said I could let anyone I want drive my classic cars. But they did say they did not like the idea of it going to a prom. I let him take it and two years later he used it as his wedding car with the same girl. :popcrn:

I was supposed to take my granddad's '41 Plymouth Convertible to my senior prom. Spent 3 years working on it but when we realized that the interior would never get done in time I was heartbroken. I seriously only cared about the car. The dance didn't matter, the after party didn't matter, even the girlfriend of 4 years didn't matter, just the car. My friends and my parents knew this so a family friend offered his '72 340 Challenger. That is until his insurance found out and sent a certified letter (I physically held it) saying that if anything happened with me driving, his policy would be cancelled and nothing covered. By that point it was a week before the prom. At this point my parents actually offered to rent me a Viper for the night and even as bad as I wanted to get it I said no. We ended up taking my '99 Chevy Lumina, I dropped her off early and was at home, asleep by 10. Two months later, I bought my Charger. We broke up at the end of the summer and I totaled the Lumina a couple years later. Now, none of that matters. I've got my Charger and my granddad actually gave me the '41 at my wedding last month. But to this day, it still wish I would have had one of the classics. Then again, I've been a car guy as long as I can remember...

My thoughts are, at least offer to throw a suit on for the evening and drive the kid. He may not end up marrying the girl or remember it for the rest of his life but I guarantee he will remember going to that dance in a Charger. Who knows, maybe that'll be the start for another car guy...

I am afraid that it just wouldn't be an option. driving my charger is a privilege not many will enjoy..

I second that!

Tomorrow is promised to no one.......drive your Charger today.

It seems like every time I try to trust someone, nothing good comes of it, lol.  You make the call as you are the only one that can vouch for the kid...

There are some that would think it was the greatest thing ever and wouldn't dare touch it...some that will think it is great and have their hands all over it and want "pics" from the driver's seat etc...and there might be a few that will be upset he came in a ba car and upstaged them and might take it out on the car.  You just never know anymore.  Ultimately it comes down to you and what you think of the kid, I do think he should have asked in person if he is next door, but if ya'll text back and forth often it might be understandable.

Look on the bright side...the vinyl seats are probably in the most danger of damage on prom night  :D

Great story Pocket and I can picture being the kid wanting to drive the car, but for prom that would be a little rough!   :shruggy:   we've all been there though.

last year we got married and my wife's grandfather let us use his 65' Impala for the whole weekend, actually 3 weeks as they dropped it off early so I could detail it for him!   :icon_smile_big: :drool5:   Even though I am in my mid 30's he had to get authorization from his insurance and he only wanted me to drive!  it worked out well as we drove to the chapel and then from the chapel back to the reception with my best man and maid of honor in the back seat!
Parked it out front and left it for the night!
Our goal now is to have our charger in good shape for any kids or cousins in the future who would like the same experience, but not whem they are in high school!   :nana:

Ask the kid if his pecker reaches his asshole...if he says "yes," then tell him to go f**k himself.

Personally if the car is a rare car or has a lot of sentimental value then no. But the local car club here lends out cars for the grad students every year. The kids get to drive the cars in the parade right up to the arena where the grad is. I offered my car up but there were more cars than kids this year so no one took it out. All the kids who want to drive fill out applications and you are accepted or denied. Granted they are only driving in the parade and up to the arean.

My Dart is hardly rare and has no real sentimental value to me so I had no problem with offering it up.

I have even offered it to my cousin's oldest if he ever wants to borrow it as well and drive a mopar instead of his dad's mustang. He readily agreed  :D

I say sure the kid can borrow any of my rides....As long as he puts down a $30K deposit, fully returnable when car is returned in as lent condition....

When your Charger is sideways, just give it more gas!
