Just as the title says... Am I dumb to run this thing stock, or should I buck up and get a copes unit?

If you are fairly handy ???

You could remove the Trans pan, and turn up the Pressure Regulator Cage a "bit"....in conjunction with making sure the Bands are adjusted OK....
and,
make sure the Throttle Pressure linkage is adjusted properly......

Seen lotsa good junkyard transmissions survive for a surprising length of time when done as above....BEAT like a Red Headed Stepchild !
But ultimately it depends how good the Trans is to begin with.
Only wimps wear Bowties !

How well a stocker will survive depends entirely on how well it was built and what condition it is in now.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

A good cooler helps any of them last longer. A good reprogramer kit and proper throttle pressure adjustment can help a healthy stock transmission last in a higher than stock powered car.   Been working in my car. So far.   :Twocents:

Ok, I know I can make this trans last while I am running my neighbors lil dog "Pookins" To the vet..... or if I am trying to haul a load of un-cartoned eggs to the local farmers market. BUT!

I want to thrash the piss out of this car. I will be driving the snot out of it, tire smoke, powercruise, track blasts....

I am worried about the drum coming apart, and coming through the floor and into me and my passenger.

I went ahead and got a Copes Pro streat auto wit ha billet steel front drum, and a converter built by them to my needed specs. I looked all over the internet and found it was not worth the gamble of hurting someone.
