I am looking at two different  440 engines with steel heads and they both have 12 to 1 compression and both owners tell me that they will run on pump gas..  I thought 10-1 was the limit on compression and 93 octane..    :-\

If they are really 12 to 1, then no way.  Not even using 1960's 102 octane.

What is the highest compression you can do with aluminum heads?

Is it a true 12:1 or is that what was listed on a set of pistons? For example, i can buy pistons labeled as 10:1 but if they were sunk under deck than thats probably no longer the case. Can you get specs? Pistons, deck height, combustion chamber cc's..etc?
