The color is called Knudsen Yellow. As the story goes Bunkie was at a race that Benny Parsons won,in a car of the same color,he goes back to Ford and orders this car equipped this way.

nitrometal

Wow, that's an amazing color and it looks so good on that car.  I love it....of course, my wife would absolutely hate it.  She has no taste (that's why she married me  :smilielol:)
I love the smell of nitro in the morning.

If I remember correctly, the Knudsen car is a Lorain Ohio build where all the production T's were Atlanta.   Lots of unique stuff on the Knudsen car.    When it was new, it had some kind of side pipe exhaust on it.

jonw29

It is a Lorain car along with the 2 Banjo cars.Tons of special stuff on it and yes it still does have the exhaust on it that exits in front of the rr tire ala AAR Cuda style. It is VERY nice.Mike has an extreme emotional attachment to the car.He got very choked up while speaking before the unveiling. His dad was attached to the car to say the least.

Any of the guys that were at the Ford gathering know a guy from Texas with a couple of Mercury's by the name of Marty Burke?

I know Marty.. Good guy to the max. He was with me when we did the Motor Trend Classic Photoshoot. He brought one each, Ford Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler (Dan Gurney edition)

Marty was there. He was parked beside me.I got the chance to chat it up with him a bit.As Troy stated he IS a great guy and loads of information and documentation.

FJ5WING

Marty has ties to my Coronet R/T. I spoke to him about 25 years ago when he was located up here in PA. and then many many years later I became owner of the R/T.

He even went out of his way to reunite the build sheet with the car!  :2thumbs:

Marty also own's J.D. McDuffie's last race car.

The car was not that badly damaged.   The problem was it landed on top of a metal pole which pierced the roof.  Marty could tell you for sure, but I think the metal pole had tire barriers attached to it.

Nope... Any chat about that day with Marty is off limits........ I'll NEVER bring it up unless he does out of respect to him. We talked emailed back and forth a couple of times and he opened up. He took it real hard... Unfortunately, the video is out there on youtube.......

Marty is a great guy. And, he has been into aero cars forever. Since the Chick Scheisser (sp)/original Talladega/Spoiler Ford Aero-Warriors club days, in fact. Marty sold me a set of NOS NASCAR Cyclone Spoiler II fenders way, way back in the day that got me started towards my old tribute Cale car. She sure was a looker.

Marty still owns the JD car. Freak accident, that. A failed left front lower ball joint sent JD into the tire wall. The impact sent his Grand Prix airborne and it came down on top of the tire wall driver's side first. The reefer rod (that the twits at The Glen used to anchor the tire barrier) actually came through the driver's window (and not the roof) with tragic results. The car started out as a Childress built Earnhardt Monte Carlo, BTW. You can see some off the original Wrangler Yellow on the roll cage bars. The car sits forlornly behind Marty's house in North Texas. It may be for sale. It could easily be repaired. I'd take it back to DE trim, myself. But I probably wouldn't go in the garage at night... The halo bar in the car and the front down tubes are a bit worse for wear. The rest of the chassis (excepting tin) is straight.

The paperwork in front of the Bunkie car is the factory paperwork. It contains the orders of how the car was to be equipped and the colors. From the date of the 1st orders which was 3/10/69 to the date of completion which was 3/26/69.I guess Bunkie had some pull.

When you are the HMFIC of Ford (well at least next to Hank the Deuce) you can get things like this done.

Some are available "over the counter" and some you have to get made to order. Moderd computer printing has advanced to the point that most shops can take a period picture and use it to generate an exact copy of just about any decal. The computer has made silk screening and the like a thing of the past. While not on an aero-car, here's another example of what modern printing shops can do. It's actually pretty incredible for a geezer like me.

Of course, most of the lettering on period NASCAR Grand National stock cars  was applied with a brush out of a One Shot sign painter's enamel can. That is getting to be a lost art.

jonw29

John now your just showin off!! :icon_smile_big:.How is the latest project coming along?

Aero426

As John said, the fender decals are the easiest part of a vintage race car restoration.   Wayne Perkins has access to a lot of the decals.  You just need to tell him what you want printed.   David Tom has them advertised on his site racepast.com   There are so many choices, you have to state which ones you want.     Some original decals show up on ePay.

Not to hijack this thread ( or wear out my welcome with a bunch of old H&M cars on a Dodge site...apologies to the admin. in advance), but the '64 is making progress. Of course. How could it not. HA. Any change would be an improvement from as purchased:

The 'Allison '68 H&M Torino (sort of an aero car) is waiting its turn.

Why does it have a tag on it??

John will clarify, but in those days there was an obscure rule that California required the plate even to race.  That would be a H-M  house or dealer plate.
