Possible Bengal charger from Ohio.
IIRC, if a dealer or group ordered 50 units they could get a special color.

Interesting - although I think some of the stated facts aren't quite right. There were 259 383 4bbl 4-speed Chargers built in 1968. Don't know how many had the 999 paint code. Strike at the transmission plant? That one is a "sold car". Inland shifter on a 4/19 build date? Interesting that it has tinted windows (on tag), head rests, and a wood grain wheel but not too many other options - manual mirror, manual brakes, no hood turn signals (although they've been added), etc.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

So what does everyone think this car should fetch pricewise? As a novice in the world of chargers I'm trying to learn what these cars are worth in various conditions. I like the look of this one but am curious what it should be worth versus what it will actually get.

Dans 68

Interesting car. I'd guess that it would go for maybe 18-20k as it looks in the pictures. Not the original engine or Carter 4426 carb. And the radiator shroud should not be there. Not to nit pick, or course. The sheet metal looks very nice.

Troy is on the mark with regards to it's "peculiarities". An April build with an Inland Shifter (and not the Hurst)? Perhaps. It appears to have been ordered (by what is on the car and the fender tag) with headrests ($272 in today's dollars), front shoulder belts ($164), tic toc tac ($302), and tinted glass all around ($245) but not with the hood mounted turn signals ($65)? I would like to see the fender support and trunk lip stampings. I would also like to see the transmission stamp. Oh, and I would also like to see a build sheet.   I guess it can't hurt to ask....

I have a few 999 4-speed "XP's" in my computer files. Here is the fender tag from an "interesting" one. Does anyone see any problems with it?  :scratchchin:   :P   I've also attached the tag from the current 999 car in question on ebay (now why would I do that?  :icon_smile_big:).

There is actually one other big difference.  :D

Dan

Ha, sure is. Put my glasses on and looked again.
Xs29 vs XP29 but has the same shipping number.  Is that a biiiingo?  :D

Also, shipping number would be out of line too.
I have a tag pic here of a XS29  207 build with a 110859
this one is XP29 with 419 build 925053

There is a pic of the dash vin in the ad.
Is this a case of current owner using the correct tag?
This is where it would be nice if Chrysler Historical(Like Pontiac and Ford) offered a service to do a vin search for documents.

The last time that I saw this car offered was on eBay in November 2008. I've posted the verbage below from that ad:

Description (revised)
This 1968 charger is 1  of 257  built with a 383  4 speed from the factory.  It retains the fender tag but there is no build sheet. It has an 8 3/4 rear axle with 3.55 gears. Options include bucket seats with a console, tachometer,  passenger side door mirror, chrome exhaust tips and special order  (999 code) orange paint which was not a standard available color in 1968. Currently, the car  has a 440 bored and stroked to 500 ci.  It has roller rockers, big valves, weisco pistons with a compression of 10.5. Carb is an 850 double pumper holley. Intake is an aluminum dual plane and exhaust consists of 2 inch hooker super competition headers and a complete 3 inch exhaust all the way back. The car runs low 12's in the 1/4 mile and with slicks should easily go into the 11's and the best part is you can drive it anywhere. The trans has been rebuilt , new clutch assembly and the driveshaft outfitted with new U-joints.  The front end has been rebuilt and the leaf springs were replaced. This car runs straight and true down the road and does not over heat. The wheels and tires are brand new with less than 1,000 miles. The wheels are 15x7 and the tires 235-60-15. The interior is immaculate with new carpet and seat covers. Everything else is original and in excellent condition. The wood grain steering wheel is all original with light wear and no cracks or crazing. This car is from California and ALL the sheet metal is original...... fenders, doors, hood, decklid ,1/4 panels, front and rear valance, floors, trunk extensions and  trunk floor.  Check out the body lines in the pictures, they are crisp and very straight!  You will not find a cleaner Charger anywhere!    This car did not  even have a leaky trunk..... the surface is perfectly smooth... even in the grooves.  The paint is very nice and the only blemishes are a few tiny rock chips.  Both bumpers have been rechromed as well.  I have included two picturesof the trunk extensions to show how clean the underside is and the original undercoating. The entire underside has original undercoating... nothing has been doctored. I probably forgot something so email with any questions you may have. A $1,000  non deposit is due immediately after the auction ends. If you plan on using any kind of check, bank check, money order then that must also be sent  10 days BEFORE you pick up the car. Cash is accepted at time of pickup.

The mileage back then was 63,768. The photos from the ad did not show the engine.

My build date is 404 and vin 341110.....somthin is not right

Not vin, but S.O. number. Still unique but different. The '68's are a different breed for sure.  ;)

Yeah, that high number S.O. has me a bit flummoxed (not really hard to do, though). Are there any other examples out there of '68's with very large S.O. numbers?  :scratchchin:

My car is a Canadian ordered car and has a unique SO that starts with "A" as all Canadian cars had. So mine won't help much here

regarding 1968 and 1969 SO/VONs.

Pretty much any lease or true special order or true special handling car (99 or 999 car, A12, dealer demos or say an outsourced car like a Daytona, sunroof car or S/S cars or fleet cars like cop cars) will carry a 700000, 800000 or 900000 series VON so it is not unusual to see a 925*** SO on a 999 paint car. 1970 and later cars use a letter as the first character to replace the number.

Based on the data I have so far, I have a theory that different makes used specific SO/VON series i.e a 999/99 paint Dodge would have 92**** number where a Plymouth would use 93***** number. More data will confirm or rebuke the theory. Research continues......

Seeking information on '69 St. Louis plant VINs, SPDs and VONs. Buld sheets and tag pictures appreciated. Over 3,000 on file thanks to people like you.

Hmm, o.k., I'll bite. It seems that the top tag is obviously a re-pop, with the poorly proportioned fonts and sizes of the stampings, along with impossible (not used) codes. If it is a glaring omission and it is staring me in the face then I'll just claim lack of sleep this year.  :P  All righty then, I'm ready to be schooled....

Dan

P.S. - It seems that between this car's last eBay sale in 2008 and today's the odometer has lost 5,375 miles....  :scratchchin:  I did ask for photos of the body stamps and transmission stamp (if it has one).

maxwellwedge

Nope - No Vins on 68 tags - The 925 number is the S.O. number.
