need material for grill screen , not the frame just the correct square screen

chargervert

I told you in one of your posts, that the correct grill screen materail was available from Sue George of the Wing Warriors club, but its kind of light guage,or if you wanted a stronger, but correct looking grill screen, then contact Mike @ www.dayclona.com. The grille screen from Sue bends real easy,Mikes is much stronger. You can see Mikes screen in my Daytona nosecone dryfit thread, back on about page 9 or 10 in the general discussion forum, here on Dodge Charger.com. I have purchased both screens, and compared them side by side!

Larry.
If I had one to measure, I have access to a CNC machine. I can make them if no one else has them in stock. They should be pretty cheap. I can make them in whatever gauge needed. Did you get my message re the braces? Same goes for this part.

Thats a lot of work to go through, when its already available from other suppliers! I think you would be reinventing the wheel! I dont think I paid all that much for the screens. I think they were around $75.00. I would think it would cost more in time, and setup than it would just to buy the screens that are availible!

hotrod98

chargervert,
The steel is cheap, the use of the equipment is free, my spare time is free and $75 is ridiculous for a small piece of metal screen. If this were a screen to repair your fireplace, would you pay $75 for it? I think not. Believe it or not, these parts aren't that hard to make. The wing braces were a lot easier to make than I thought they would be. It's hard to believe that people get $200+ for them. When they were finished, I had to be careful not to mix Rene's originals in with them. I couldn't tell them apart.

The screen for my coal stove was more than $200,$75 would have been a bargain! Its your time mines worth more than that too me!

Larry(s)

the screen from Wing Warriors is correct in shape, it is .032 in gauge, the originals were .023 (very flimsy).....my is correct in shape, and is .047 thick and is made from HS-20 steel, wing warriors is colled rolled steel,................either screen is fine for your application,.........................W.Warriors is $50............shipped flat, .................Mine is $60.............shipped prebent, or flat, your choice?.....................$60 includes shipping,............I currently have 34 screens in stock, also have 16 superbird screens $40 in stock,..........my screen is  digitial punched, leaving a nice radius on the edges, no burrs, or sharp edges...........if you prefer the economy brand contact Winged Warriors, attn. Wayne Perkins, he's the gentleman making them! ...........if an additional $10 is in your budget contact w.w.w. DAYCLONA.com for instructions

Man those coal stoves are expensive. You don't really burn coal in it though, do you?  ;D
As for parts, I really don't care where people buy their parts. I just try to help the guys out sometimes. I understand when money's tight. I've been there. I didn't make a dime on the wing braces...never intended to. I don't see me getting interested in my daytona clone project again, but my wife really wants her superbird clone built. She's already gathering parts. When I told her that she couldn't have my new hemi for her bird clone, she went ahead and ordered one for herself. If I ever find someone that actually has the superbird parts in stock, I'll order them. Otherwise, she can just drive one of her other cars for now.
Wasn't trying to dis anyone, just trying to set the record straight.

BTW, I'm impressed with the work that larry's doing on his daytona clone. Love it when he posts the pics along with the story.

Hey Hot Rod,I don't have the coal stove anymore, but I wasn't kidding the damn grate was $200! I can understand you doing that for some of the higher priced parts, but a 50,or 60 dollar grille screen! I was just trying to help you guys out with the info! Larrys clone is coming right along! I do think he should take some of those funds he saved on his window plug, and buy some steel Zee bars, those glass ones he has will not hold up! If he dosen't want to spend the coin, then he may want to reinforce them!

Never underestimate the strength of fiberglass. We repair Volvo trucks here at the body shop all of the time. A couple of years ago we had a driver come in that needed a fender patched to get by until he was able to settle with his insurance company. We used fiberglass mat and Fiberglass Evercoat SMC resin. We told him that it might last a couple of weeks on those harsh interstates and that he needed to get back so that we could put a new fender on as soon as possible. Well, he came by a few days ago and that patch is still holding over two years later. Probably spent the insurance money over at the casino. The fender, headlamp assy and park lamp on Volvo trucks aren't exactly light and he's probably racked up a 1000,000 miles or more.
While I agree that steel is usually stronger than fiberglass, it would be interesting to see a test between the fiberglass z brace and a steel z-brace in the vertical position. I would bet that the fiberglass part wouldn't fail as soon as some people think. If fiberglass was all that weak, I don't think that just about every truck from 2-ton on up would have a fiberglass hood.

I have seen the fiberglass ones on many cars over the years, and have seen them cracked, patched over, with sheets of resin, and pop riveted back together with strips of metal. I have also seen turn buckles actually holding the cones to the car! You can take my advise,or find out the hard way! if you don't believe me just ask Dane, he won't run them either! It's easier to change them now, then it will be to change them on a painted car!

hotrod98

Well it's official...I'm totally bored...let's talk about something else.  :icon_smile_big:

I may decide to mount nose like dane in future , but you still want z brackets to funnel air to radiator

hotrod98

On a clone, I don't think that it's necessary to have a z-bracket that exactly resembles a factory piece. They don't look that complicated to me. Larry, I don't think you would have any trouble fabbing one up yourself out of 18 gauge steel, especially if you have a fiberglass set to go by. As for a stiffener, you could just use a piece of sheet metal bent like a piece of angle iron and weld it on about where the Popsicle stick depression is on a factory part.
As soon as I get this hemi gtx finished, I plan to get the body on the rotisserie for the bird clone. Since the conversions are similar to building a daytona clone, I'll post some of my work here if the Charger guys don't get upset. I'll just make sure that my 69 R/T SE is in the back ground of the pics.  :icon_smile_cool:

Larry,
I mentioned it before, but if you get 5 or 6 guys that want a set of braces, I can get the fab shop to make them up and I could weld them.
I don't have time to prime or paint them this time around, but we could still probably ship them out for about $70 or $75 per set inc shipping. Rene has a set of mine and a set of originals. Ask him how close they are.
Let me know and I'll check to see if our prices are still good at the fab shop. This shop is "state of the art" and they do some pretty complicated stuff. They said that if I brought them the wing washers that they might be able to build something similar, but I got busy and never got a set for them to look at. I've just been too busy to focus on the outside stuff.

If you guys want your nosecones to stay attached to your cars, then make your Zee bars from steel! If you aren't concerned about the popsicle stick impression, then thats your buisness! I'm just tryin to help you out here! Mine have the impression, because I don't want people saying mines not correct! If you dont care thats up to you! I still recomend a steel part to support the cone!, make steel Zee bars, you won't be sorry!

hotrod98

I plan to make my z brackets and frame braces from steel. I never said that I was using fiberglass pieces on my car. As for correctness, I don't really care. If it's not a real daytona/superbird then what difference could it possibly make. I personally think that stock daytonas and superbirds are too plain. I have several low mileage all original big block b-bodies to drive. I want something totally different now, kind of like my wife's '73 fuel injected cuda. I'm using a '70 coronet R/T hood for my bird hood conversion, 18" billet magnums, large disc brakes front and rear, 426 crate motor with fuel injection and Keisler 5 speed. Still trying to think up more wild changes from stock. I get bored easily.

he's a real good fabricator. I've hinted to him about doing some work for me but he's real focused on his car. i don't have the z brackets for mine. i hear what your saying about going metal with them. I'd like to go with metal z brackets and pivots. right know money is tight. I'm trying to finish my 68 r/t. so I'm just working on the back of my Daytona. i might have to go with reinforced fiberglass for the z brackets but the light pivots have to be metal. Rene

hotrod98

Rene,
I started to list them all but ran out of room. lol  Including the transams, I have around 18 cars now plus the drag car.  I did sell the 63 belvederes, the 72 cuda, all of the camaros and the chevelles though, including the 69 SS that I drove in high school.  I probably should sell about half of my cars, but I've promised several of them to my children and a few of them to other family members. I try to get at least one out each week and drive it. The biggest problem I'm having (other than batteries) is brakes. The superbee has the left rear brake grabbing and the charger pedal is getting hard, probably the booster.  The headlamp switch on the B5 runner is not working right. etc., etc., etc.
I'm going to build another building to store some of the cars in the spring and move the resto work from the dealership to the main shop at the house. I'm getting tired of being at the dealership every day of the week.
My fiberglass guy is supposed to start on the superbird parts sometime in the spring. If I like what I see, I told him that I would build him a building just for that work. I'll put that building on the other two acres that I have next to the house. If you decide that you want to do resto work, maybe you could just move down here. It's 70 degrees here right now. hint hint
BTW, here's a pic of the 67 hemi gtx. I'm taking it off of the rotisserie next week and it's going to the house.
